1992 240 Shifting/transmission problems 200 1992

The last week or so, my gas pedal has seemed kind of "loose" up around 4th gear. Tonight as I was driving home, I couldn't get the car to shift above 2nd. The transmission fluid is full and clean, car has about 148k miles on it. I'm thinking it may be something with the overdrive relay? Anybody have any suggestions, hints, or ideas on how much it would cost to fix a problem like this?

Symptoms of a kickdown cable problem (between the throttle spindle and the transmission bell housing). Pull the cable up a bit and release to see if it returns freely. Make sure the cable is properly seated in the throttle spindle pulley groove. May just be frozen or slightly frayed in which case a lube job can often give temporary relief, but I'm guessing it's totally broken. Refer to 700/900 FAQ here for details on replacement and adjustment. Job can be a bit tedious and messy.
