AMM Bellows Hose 200 1987

I wanted to post one other thing about AMM bellows hoses.

I've used lots of duct tape over the years to keep mine closed, but eventually bought a new one from FCP Groton.

The nipples on these hoses are not actually part of the hose itself, but are sort of snapped and glued into the main hose. They almost immediately begin to come apart (and leak air). You can't even get a good fit with duct tape when that happens. I used heavy duty plastic cement around the nipples, and that lasted maybe 3 months before they worked loose. The total length of time that FCP hose was on my car was less than 9 months. $17.00 or so.

I ordered a replacement from IPD. At least it has a "Volvo" stamped into the plastic and a number, but that nipple connection doesn't look a lot better. I sealed the nipples on these with cement before I installed the hose, and hopefully this will last a little longer. It cost around $35.00 or so.

Of course, donor cars sometimes yield a decent hose, but most I have found have rubbed against something and worked a hole in them. Those low holes do respond well to duct tape.

Any comments on better ideas or better hoses are welcome.

Dow

I had a gallon of roof mastic which had rubber compound in it. My AMM hose is coated with that material as a protective covering. The connection at TB is prone to leak so I have used some flashing sealant there.

Wished I read this before ordering one from FCP. Will see if I can cancel the order and then go get an original one from the Volvo dealer locally.

I bought an aftermarket one a few years back. Within a day the nipples had broke off. Needless to say this is one of those parts that I put in the must have genuine Volvo. I have had good luck sealing holes with black polyurethane sealer.

i totally agree, vacuum hoses are one thing, but definitely OEM for the air intake to the AMM, the FI systems are pretty touchy about properly metered air.

On small holes I have had good luck using black liquid electrical tape. Comes in a can with a brush.

Thin coats applied to the inside and outside. Fills the grooves well and it is fairly flexible.

I have even thought of spray on plastic dip that you see on hand tools. Haven't holes that big yet!

What sucks is that my daily driver is being kept alive at the moment with duct tape. My old 86 set to be parted out but recently bought my brother for temporary needs has an aftermarket and my friends volvo now has an aftermarket due to me exchanging his oiled up original one. I've bought three of these things when I believe taking the original to the car wash with engine degreaser would have been the better solution.

The aftermarket ones remind me of the plastic animals you could get made before your eyes at the Zoo from a coin operated machine. Thinner than an airbrushed runway model.
