Rough/sticky clutch pedal 200 1989

Hello,
The clutch pedal in my '89 244 has a slight rough/sticky feeling when being pressed and released. It's not difficult to press and the stickiness is only noticeable when making fine adjustments of the clutch pedal/moving the pedal slowly. My concern is that it makes starting from stopped jerky because once the clutch starts to engage, it's very difficult to keep the pedal release smooth. It seems to be the same whether the car is in gear or not.

The clutch was replaced by the previous owner(they didn't drive it much due to faulty fuel pump relay), and I've only had the car for about a year, so it probably has less than 15k on it.

Could the fix be as simple as replacing the clutch cable, or is there a chance the problems is more serious?

Thanks for your help!

Try ZEP 45. it's even better than PB lube, I'd spray it on all the moving parts, we used it at our shop and it worked great, appears the linkage is a bit corroded.

The return spring that runs from the clutch cable attaching point on the transmission to a small hole on the transmission crossmember may be missing. I fabricated one from a piece of coat hanger and a spring that I bought at a hardware store. The extra tension on the cable assembly smoothed things out.

I took at quick look last night and it appears the return spring is missing. I ordered one from FCP Groton, so we'll see if that fixes my problem. Thanks for your help!

EDIT: I did a little more research and it appears that M47's don't use a clutch return spring. I ordered a new OEM clutch cable along with the return spring, so I'll try installing that and see if it resolves the issues.

look to see if an aftermarket cable was put on that doesn't have the metal sleeving. The good ones like at IPD have the metal casing covering the cable. Look from the engine compartment at it. If it doesn't have that then yes the cable will fail way before you'd think a new cable should. I've had the lesser quality cables break in 1.5 years and the last one didn't even adjust correctly for more than a few mile and only lasted less than a week.
