ABS light comes on while driving 200 1992

OK - here's an odd one. I drove my daughter's 240 to work every day this week cause she needed to run. (Vicky's been sitting pretty much since we bought her several months a go). I figured running it 160 miles a day would be good for her.

She runs perfect except for showing warm when AC is running (posted earlier) and I noticed the ABS light came one one day while driving down the Interstate. Next day it didn't come on, so I was trying to figure out what was going on. Yesterday, I was able to duplicate the problem quite easily.

As soon as she touches 80 mph, the ABS light comes on. I can pull over, turn off the engine (which turns off the light) and then replicate the issue by speeding up to 80.

Any ideas what may be the cause? (I'm suspecting something in the console)

Clean the ABS sensors for both front wheels before worrying about anything more difficult or expensive being wrong.

Does your speedometer work fine, no hiccups? I ask because if the issue doesn't clear up after cleaning the front sensors, speedo problems would indicate the rear sensor (which does double duty for speedo and ABS) may need attention--or much more likely, the wiring to it.

Since we're supposed to have a heat index of around 115 for the next couple of days - I'll check it out later this week. Luckily she's not a daily driver (yet) - my daughter hasn't taken her driver's test.

Probably not rear sensor if the Speedo has anything to do with it - everything is working great there. When I put new tires on her, I tested it against the readings on a GPS - and she's shows 70 when the GPS shows about 66. I attributed that to tire size, and frankly I'm glad it shows a bit fast. (teenage driver)

Thanks for all the help - This forum is the BEST!!!

I agree that the sensors are probably dirty with brake dust. They (and the tone wheel) are easy to clean with brake cleaner. Make sure it's non-chlorinated.
I clean mine every time I change my brake pads, and if the sensor is dirty, the signal will weaken as speeds increase due to what's basically lag of an electrical signal that is starting or stopping.

Hopefully that's the whole problem.

I think John's right about the rear sensor. I'm not that familiar with it, but I believe it's in the differential or on the driveshaft.

Good Luck and Post Back

or maybe there's something wrong with the sensors.
