Volvo Devin race car 444-544

Several months ago I purchased a '59 Devin with Volvo running gear. For those not familiar with Bill Devin and his cars, Devin was once the largest manufacturer of fiberglas car bodies in the world. He offered kits to fit several different frames, although most people made their own. He went out of business in '65 or so.

Devin designed most of his bodies to look like mid-50's Ferraris. In the day, they were used on some pretty successful race cars. The Devin SS (google it) was his most famous car. With the right frame and running gear, Devins are pretty popular vintage race cars today.

My body is the same as the body on a Devin SS. The frame on my car, though, is no good. I'd like to remount my body on a Duett frame and make the car into a vintage racer. Finding a Duett frame, though, is not easy.

Does anyone out there know of a Duett frame for sale? I've got lots of 544 running gear, and don't need any body parts at all. I only need the frame.

Building a space frame is really not that difficult. I'd also have a look at some of the Locost websites for inspiration. I think you'd end up with something rather more tractable than using a Duett chassis.

Can't help you with the frame... but man, were it me, I'd see about having one built up, tube style.

Favorite Devin story though... Jaguar XKC 023, once thought to be missing... discovered under a Devin body, having been rolled. Great story if you have a few minutes...

Dennis-

I saw a few last year on IPD website, eBay and Craigslist. I posted them here when I saw them.

I ran into somebody a couple of weeks ago that said they know of two in Boulder. I'll run by and ask him if he could give me some information on them.

I have a P210, it's not for sale.

Paul

Try these guys:

They sent me this email a few weeks ago:

"we have complete 122s, parts or the 445, be spacific in what yo want, i am sure we can help you out"

I think they are in the San Francisco area?

Paul - that would be a great help. With a reasonable (190 hp) b18, this could be the fastest vintage Volvo around. Thanks in advance. Dennis

A few years ago I did photos for a driver at the Pittsburgh Vintage GP who was racing a Devin bodied car with a B18 and 544 running gear (homebuilt tube frame). He purchased the 544 back in the 60's after it had been raced and rolled at Watkins Glen and then left at a local garage till examined by an insurance company. Good luck with your project. -- Dave
