Steering Wheel Removal - Nut Size 200 1982

I need to remove my steering wheel on my '82 245 to correct some wiring mistakes that I made recently.

The nut appears to be somewhere between 18mm and 23mm. What is the correct size? Also, what is the torque setting for replacement. The Bentley and a search have not been helpful.

Thanks for your help!

Best,
Tom

27 mm is correct. I was able to find a 1 1/16" deep socket and that worked just fine! Thanks Charles, Dave, and Cliff for your help and responses. I wasn't able to get my shallow 27 mm over the nut and I am a little leery about "hammer work".

Best,
Tom

What has always worked for me removing a Volvo wheel---leave the nut on a few turns as already suggested--plant your feet firmly on the floor--hands on the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock--pull upward with slight rocking side to side motion till it pops. -- Dave

1 1/16" also works well

not sure about 82 - my 92 has a 27mm. Of course a deep socket is necessary.

Hope that helps
Charles

Not necessarily. The shaft has a narrower diameter at the end, which may fit inside the square shank of the socket. Try putting the socket on alone, then see if there is enough clearance left for the ratchet extension still to fit inside.

Leave the nut partly on, press your knees up behind the wheel pushing it towards you, then hit the end of the shaft hard with a heavy hammer.
The nut is so that you don't break your front teeth.
