BRASS Line Nuts, Where to Buy + Why Aftermarket ALWAYS sucks. 200

I'm doing a complete brake job (calipers, rotors, pads - front and rear) on a '90 240 which I previously renewed some time ago. During the previous go round, I replaced all the front brake lines with the copper/nickel stuff from FCP. At that time I reasoned that the FCP aftermarket lines had to be damn close to the OE Volvo stuff; I reasoned wrongly.

The tubing of the FCP lines has weather the storm well enough, but the line (aka, tube) nuts have frozen to the tubing; I am guessing it has something to do with the lines being an alloy of copper/nickel and the nuts being steel. Backing out the line nuts just twists the tubing.

Anyway, I have a coil of Cunifer (copper/nickel) brake line and I plan to make up the lines myself. Unfortunately, I don't have any of the BRASS line nuts which Volvo used originally. I can find the correct M10X1.0 line nuts in steel almost anywhere, but I cannot seem to find them in brass.

Does anyone know of a source for these things made out of brass?

Thanks,one and all,

Rich

I want to say these are brass, but they don't specifically call it out.

Looks like yellow chromate coating to me. (Steel).

Ah yes, right you are:

"All nuts are steel except where followed by ss (stainless steel) or br (brass)"

They sure do call them brake lines for a reason!Regardless of the line and fitting material, and the effect of electrolysis, etc.I find that it works well to coat the inner workings of that fitting with anti-seize compound and then coat the outside of it also.

Living in the Rust Belt, Fel-Pro C5-A has been my best friend for many years, but even that superior anti-seize was not enough to prevent the steel line nuts from freezing solid to the Cunifer brake lines.

I used to complain about Volvo using brass line nuts because they would round over when trying to remove them, that was, until I bought an 11mm Proto line wrench; now, I can see their wisdom.

I've been fabricating brake lines from Cunifer for awhile and I have searched for BRASS, 10 X 1.0 MM line nuts almost as long without finding a source for them. I'm starting to think that the brass line nuts are a Volvo proprietary item and not available to the Great Unwashed.

I once had to replace a hard brake line on a 240. I located a used line from VOLUPARTS.com. This might save you the search for the brass line tube nut. Worked great for me and price was good. In this case, I just had to specific with regard to the model/year since subtle changes occurred with introduction of ABS.

For the fun of Volvos,
Mike

You will need a double flaring tool and the lines themselves are steel if I remember correctly.. Might want to buy from Tasca Volvo. Dave.

The Volvo brake lines use a different kind of flare ie. bubble. Bubble flare kits are available on Ebay.

The Volvo brake lines are made of nickle-copper and resist rust better than steel.

I get my brass fittings from PnPs. I cut off calipers taking a section of line with the fittings attached. A lot easier than trying to undo the fittings.
