Hi!!!! I'm new to this forum and i already find it very interesting. Here we go. My 1992 740 NO Turbo keeps dying on me.It does it at any time or at any speed.Idle is a little rough, check engine light ON.I replaced...Distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs(calibrated them) and wires, all new.I was reading on this forum probable causes..I'm also suspecting the fuel pump relay, I know there are relays inside the console but I don't know wish one is exactly. Please help, this is driving me Crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 1987 740GLE has done this over the past 2-3 years (sometimes twice a week, sometimes twice a month, it varies) mostly on side-streets.

In my case it's not a fuel problem, it's the "positive" (+) battery cable, which won't seat fully all the way down on the post. I just give the cable/post a good whack or 2 with a hammer and she starts right back up.

Pull the codes like Aleekat says.
Maybe there's a clue there.

The Fuel and RSR relays will croak your car.
Maybe it's smart to get new ones, since 20 year old relays get tired
and those two are vital.

Try FCP Groton for parts

Bill

1) You can bypass the fuel pump relay in the back of the 700 with the 'christmas tree' connection. Jumper the wire that feeds power to the electric antenna (red/green) to the pink wire going into tank, in a 3 or 4 pin connector just behind the left wheel well. Some cars have a red wire that goes into the tank, but the wire from the control relay is still pink. Check your wiring diagrams! If you connect to the wrong wire you may melt the tank level sensor! I use my digital meter and measure amps here, using the probes as the connection. The value is usually 5 or 6 amps. This is hot-wiring your pumps; the red/green wire is fused up front. This is the easy way to test the relay. This does not require you to disconnect anything, just test it in place.
2) The radio suppression relay is under the hood, black with 4 shrouded bullet shaped terminals on the bottom. It turns on the injectors. Trying a different one is best there. It is usually on the water reservoir. Some models have 2 identical relays, one for the radiator fan, which is not necessary to make the engine run.
3) I replace both these relays when they are 10 years old as a preventive.
