gear shift - bruised thumbs 900 1993

Has anyone got any ideas on a problem I have with my 940 turbo 2L (160K miles, 5 speed manual, UK).

I think the clutch diaphragm is worn as its a swine to get into gear at traffic lights etc but doesnt slip when you put your foot down. It's been like it since I bought the car 2 years ago (20K miles). I can live with the problem but it needs so much force sometimes that my hand whacks into the dash often bringing tears to my eyes. I've moved the cigarette lighter to the right hand side which has improved things slightly.

Short of wearing boxing gloves or paying out for a new clutch (£300 UK), is the gearshift lever adjustable or is the lever now slightly bent possibly.

any thoughts welcome. . .

It sounds as if clutch is not disengaging fully. Fluid level OK? Pumping it help? What is the diaphragm?

thanks for thoughts guys,

diaphragm is the sort of spring plate arrangement with a lot of inwardly pointing spring fingers that sits in the pressure plate housing. If the fingers are weakened the plate wont full release and you get clutch drag.

fluid level OK, pumping no difference. Will investigate shift collar theory

regards

I don't know much about 900's specifically, but that sounds like either worn synchros or a screwey shift-collar. Hopefully it's the shift collar.

What about down shifting to 1st as you're coming to a stop? I do this in my new-to-me 240 and then I can shift out of 1st and back in with no trouble, so long as I don't roll.

The shift collar can completely prevent you from getting into or out of any gear. My brother's seized up on a suzuki samurai one day and we had no idea what the problem was.
It will be underneath the grey rubber shifter boot.

Good Luck,
