Quick question about rear brake reassembly 120-130

I'm in the final stages of putting together the aft end of my '67. Brake shoes, cylinders, adjusters, lines, springs, and hardware are all new.

I'm ready to bleed the system and re-fit the the drums at this point. Is it possible to bleed and verify everything is moving as expected before reinstalling the drums? Or will the pressure generated by the wheel cylinders just overcome the springs and pop the pistons out if I pump the brakes without drums constraining everything?

I'm fairly confidant everything is up to snuff and should work fine, but the drums are such a chore to remove I'd rather know everything is working properly before putting them back on.

If you immobilize the pistons somehow, then I don't see a reason not to bleed.
But, I see lots of ways that it's going to cause problems and the pistons will suddenly come loose and self-destruct. I would bleed with the shoes on, even though it's a pain.

Any means of holding the shoes together while you apply pressure at the pedal is the same as having the brake drum in place, IMHO. For instance, once the shoes and the rest of the hardware is in place a ratcheting hold down wrapped around the shoes and tightened up should work.

You have to have the drums on to bleed the brakes.
You don't have to tighten the axle nuts before bleeding though.
If you have the right puller they come off fairly easily.
If you DO bleed before tightening the axle nuts, BE SURE that you do tighten them before driving the car!!
