Car is a 1988 245 w/ approx 240K. Car has severely delayed upshift from 1 when in D. Makes the 1-2 shift fine when in 2. Local indie trans guy (not Aamco) says it appears that it is actually skipping 2 when in D and going directly from 1 to 3. Any of you familiar with the scary innards of the AW have any ideas on what could be going on? The guy admits he is at a loss as to what could cause this.
Will pursue getting an AW-71L from one of the local junkyards if we end up having to replace.

had a long talk with the tech this AM.
Based on the pressure readings he was getting, he says the 1-2 shift valve is opening like it should, but something further down the line has blown and the brake that engages to lock things down for 2nd simply is not getting turned on. He commented that what i was interpreting as an upshift when the car was in 2 was in fact only the second brake engaging, the primary brake was not and the planetary gearset was still turning as in first gear.
So, on to tracking down a good low-mileage AW71L. (If you're near VA and have a known good one you'd like to sell, let me know. A road trip beats a day at the junkyard easy.)

I had a similar problem with both my 940s when cars were parked overnight and tranny is cold.
It would take a mile before it shifted out of 1st. And when it finally did, it will shift into the rest of the gears fine. But when you come to a dead stop, and then take off again, it would start off it 2nd. To help it shift out of 1st, placing the shifter in 2 would most of the time help.
After 3 to 4 cycles of stop and go and the tranny has warmed up, it will work perfect for the rest of the day, until the next morning, or if car is parked for extended periods during the day.
I did not have the chance to fix the problem in the first car as it was destroyed in an accident. On the second car, it turned out to be some cracked internal seals and a jammed valve body.
Tranny now shift perfect even when cold, and ready for another 200k miles.

Has the kickdown valve been checked? Maybe it's stuck? Assuming the cable is ok.
My understanding of the kickdown valve is that it is a spool type valve which can jam with only a particle of debris.

The valve body might have severely worn out balls. They can wander and wind up in weird places. If the second gear engages a second brake, a separate portion of the valve body is probably active.
What transmission is it?
There are a couple valve body rebuild guides for 740's if it's a shared transmission. It'd be a tall order for me to do it myself, but someone with more experience might have no problem.
Good Luck

Does your '88 have a cable-driven, or electrical impulse, speedometer? I don't know, myself, when they changed over because my ownership knowledge jumps from '84 to '93, but my reason for asking is that the -L (lock-up) tranny came pretty late (I think), and is likely from the era when the speedos were electrical impulse driven, while your '88 instrument panel might still need a cable driven input.
I may be wrong about the above, but just thought I'd give you a heads up just in case you might wind up with a tranny you can't use.
Good luck -- hope it all works out. That AW-71L is a good choice (one I would pick for my '93's if I had to change trannies).

they went to electric speedos starting in 1986, so no worries there.

Check the kick down cable, it should move freely and be attached to something inside the transmission. The cable is mounted on the pulley beside the throttle cable.
The inner cable can corrode to the outer sleeve fusing them together. You may be able to separate them with some PB Blaster and tinkering.

Dan,
I've already played games with lubing and adjusting the kickdown cable. Not binding at all, and already quite loose. The 1-2 shift is early and smooth as butter when the selector is in 2.

If it is like a mid 70's Ford C4 transmission, the #2 clutch band is shot or loose. That resulted in the identical symptoms that you are reporting. If the AW-70 is set up the same way, I do not know.

Completely different design. No bands in Volvo automatics since the BW35.
It looks like the only difference for 2nd gear between D and 2 is that there's a second brake engaged in 2, because it is assumed that you'd be in 2 hoping for better engine braking. And that doesn't really explain these symptoms, as that's what happens once you're IN 2, not when you're trying to GET into 2.
I have green books for both the 700 series AW70/71/72 and the 200 series BW55/AW55/70 and taken together, they at least give me a few relevant questions to ask the tech on Monday morning. At present, I have no idea what diagnostic tests he has performed. I'm hoping to get some good ideas for specific things to check, tests to perform, etc. Surely not _everyone_ here has had their AW70 series trannies magically healed with only a fluid flush and a tease of the kickdown cable... :-)

They are the first and least expensive things to do and have proven to correct problems.

Dan,
I'm not denying they often help; they made a difference on one of my own cars. It's just that I did both three months ago shortly after my friend bought this car, and they made no difference in this particular problem. It has done this since day 1. I meant to link to the old thread from May/June, in my haste (posting from work) I forgot: 1-2 shift problems with AW70
As to why someone would buy a 240 with an obvious tranny issue: b/c it was $400, everything else wrong with it could be fixed quickly and cheaply, and I had faith in the fluid flush & kickdown cable clean/lube to cure the problem.

Such a deal, so if the simple stuff doesn't work a $100 bone yard special might.
Good luck
