Intermittent Hard Start 200 1988

The old Volvo is having a hard time starting lately. If I turn the starter on, put the gas pedal to the floor, eventually it roars to life. I don't normally depress the gas pedal when starting...this isn't a problem of flooding...but just when it fails to start the normal way. The car is also surging at idle. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Hello,

It's flooding or it is not getting fuel. If depressing the accelerator has an effect, then flooding would be the culprit.

Check the fuel pressure regulator vacuum port for fuel presence/leakage. You may also have a leaking injector.
