Trunk light... What are you using, if anything? 120-130 1966

Greetings all,

One modern touch that I miss on my '66 130 is a light in the trunk. I grew to really like having the light in my 242.

I know there is an OE part that does the job, but I'm sure it's quite rare, and when it does pop up, it probably costs a great deal.

What are you guys using? How do you have it hooked up? Idealy I'd like something like the set up I had in the 242 (IE, a light that was mounted in the trunk lid that would automatically turn on when the lid was opened.)

Thanks as always.

I always thought a 240 trunk light would work. You might have to get a box to get it fit.

All you need do is visit any auto parts store and buy a mercury-switch light and mount it in the trunk and connect it to a positive 12-volt supply (hot) and then ground the other wire. When the trunk is opened, the mercury will make the electrical connection needed to turn on lthe light. Naturally, the light fixture has to be mounted on the lid which goes from horizontal while closed and vertical when opened. Good luck.

Mercury switches can be a bit fussy to find the right spot to mount; I played around with one in my 2dr about 30 years ago and eventually removed it. Other options are a pin switch, or a reed switch (and magnet).

This place sells some interesting lights:

I would recommend warm white if you use LEDs; the blue-white that you commonly see on bikes and cheap lights are crappy for distinguishing colors. One of the festoon bulbs with six of the SMD emitters (LEDs) will be plenty bright inside your trunk.

You're only likely to need it when your lights are on so you could just wire a suitable switchable interior light from the pic-n-pull into a rear light. Perhaps fit it under the back shelf. A chunky one from a pick up should do the trick.
