How do I get to the top starter bolt?? 700 1991

Need to get my starter rebuilt on my 91 744. Two 18mm bolts stand in my way. I got the bottom one loose with a ratchet and breaker bar. Top one seems to have little to no access? seems like i have to go buy a short 18mm wrench. No way to get a socket on there. ~1 inch clearance off bolt... any handy tips from you folks?

Thanks!
Oliver

thanks for the replies, good stuff. The problem i found with the wrench was that it was too long... ill need a shorter wrench it seems, then i should have no problems.

Most people go in over the top with about three feet of extensions and the socket on a universal adapter. Volvo didn't make it easy for you.

That's the case for the early starter with the big through-bolts. The later one has threaded holes and a short bolt that conmes out from the front.

Yes, the Craftsman ratcheting box wrench works great in that confined spot. If you've go long arms it can be done from above without removing anything except the bolts. Short arms, do it from below and drop the trans crossmember to gain access and longer throw on the wrench.

Do you know what year they made the change?

I think it was '85-86 onward, from B21/23 to B230, but don't quote me on that.

No 700 experience for me except getting parts in the yard from them, but I pulled a starter, and it comes out just like one from a 240.

"The later one has threaded holes and a short bolt that conmes out from the front."

The bolt comes out from the back, just like every other one. A long pattern box wrench worked where my collection of extensions I normally used did not.

This worked well on the bolts before the weight-savings change to 18 from 19.

a normal 18mm 6-point box wrench worked fine for me. The bolt may put up a bit of a fight at first, but eventually it will get started. Unfortunately, there's a lot of crap in the way, not all of which can be easily moved; at least get all the intake snorkel stuff out of there.

One of those fancy ratcheting wrenches would probably work well here, as repeatedly fitting a box wrench over the bolt head in that confined space gets old fast.
