use of glass fuses 200 1991

I just blew out an eight amp fuse while trying to diagnose a brake light problem on my wife’s 91 240. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find any more ceramic fuses in the Kingwood/ Humble area. Can I replace fuses in a 91 and 92 with plastic fuses or use the glass fuses? I think I read somewhere that I could use one but not the other and now I cannot find it. Thank you for your help.

It is OK to use all types so long as they fit and match the current rating.

Some used to buy the notion the glass fuses were "stainless" as some sort of plus. They're nickel-plated.

Either way, the enemy is galvanic corrosion over time, made worse by windshield and cowl leaks -- every drop of water follows the harness down to the fuse panel.

So the theory I buy, is to keep the contact metals as like each other as possible. Add some grease to exclude moisture. I've had the best luck with the copper and brass fuses. Yes it helps if they're on ceramic, so when they do lose contact, and heat up, they don't shrink and char, but preventing that in the first place is the best approach.

Glass fuses can be (go) bad inside the end where you can't see it, but that's something you can live with.

The Euro parts houses now sell the brass and copper on ceramic very reasonably.

One of the things I do when picking parts from any 240 is look for good fuses. If you buy fuses its a couple dollars for a couple fuses. If you go to a pick n pull and pull fuses they are usually free. At least where I go. They don't charge for something like that other than a dollar to get into the yard. Or if you have other items to buy they just throw them in with the price. I've collected nearly all the fuses I'll need in the next decade. 25 amp fuses from the 740 are nice because they are protected.
