240 93 Odometer gear replacement time 25 or 26 tooth? 200

Hopefully it's just the gear, the speedometer is still working. I've done this on the 92 awhile back. Went to order one and saw that there is two options 25 or 26 teeth. Is there anyway to know w/o taking it apart and counting teeth?
Thanks,
JP

Thanks but according to what I read the 92-93 can have either 25 or 26. Is there a way to tell other than Count DaTeeth? I'm ok w/ counting up to 25 or 26 (got a calculator handy), it's just the tear down reassemble order part tear down reassemble dance I'd like to avoid....ok call me lazy..

If you are only lazy, order both. (Is the 26 actually available ?) If you are cheap and lazy, not everything can be optimized.

Well, here I am w/ gear in hand - it's a 26 gear tooth, counted it three times.
It's actually pretty easy to get at.
But here's the catch - the gear is fine, its the one behind the big grey disc that it mounts to. It was black and appears to drive the odometer and trip odometer gears. It has totally disentegrated into small bits and pieces and plastic goo. I think these two pieces are what's called the 15 tooth pod http://www.odometergears.com/volvo.html...I'll order this and also the 26 tooth gear, just in case...wish somebody sold new 240's I'd order one of those too..

btw is there any special orientation the pod should be as it's asymetrical on one side - what does it do?
Thanks,
JP

Update - good news and bad news!
Good news - ordered a pod and 26 tooth gear and installed same.
Bad news - still no miles on the odometer or trip odometer (maybe that's good?).
Speedo works fine, although it always seems to be reading about 80 when I'm on the highway...
I removed it again (twice) and carefully cleaned out the gears w/ a pic and also used some canned air to blow the dust out. I also check the operation of the odometer and trip odometer - I'm able to add miles by rotating the gears that the pod drives. During re-assembly I made sure everything was seated and meshed. What am I missing? Is there anyway to check the operation w/ the panel pulled?
Thanks,
JP

P.S. The other good news is I'm getting to be a champ at R & I the instrument panel, in fact disconnecting the wires w/ one hand w/o looking reminds me of other dexterious activities undertaken long ago (hint involves a date...)

Make sure the solder is good on the 3 wires to the motor - it's easy to mess them up when taking it all appart. (Mine weren't too good to start and just laying the motor on the side was more tension than they could handle!)

Hope that helps
Charles

Thanks all:
Art - thanks for the link, that battery charge test rig is a great idea. Btw I had removed the little odometer motor "dradle" during the week while waiting for the replacement gear, hopefully that didn't cause any harm.

Birdfarmer - I'll pull it again to check the solder connections.

I tried this and was unsuccessful. I finally just went to the pull part and bought another head. Replaced the gears and it worked.
