Preventive Shaft Seal replacement - or leave well enough alone 200

The Subject line pretty much says it all. I am replacing the water pump and timing belt, I have the 3 shaft seals in hand, but everything looks quiet and dry. Let sleeping dogs lie?

If it ain't broke.... don't fix it. There are many ways of installing the seals and messing them up. My brother's 245 went 200K with the originals and 3 timing belt changes.

Let the Dogs Lie.

My first Seal change was at 300K miles. Only the Cam Seal was weeping. So when it was Timing Belt change time...I did all 3 front seals. I still wouldn't recommend doing all three like I did. The Cam is the last to see Oil lubrication at each Startup.. probably why that one seems to fail more oten then the others.

If they start weeping....Wait for teh next T Belt change.

I used to think it was imperative to replace the seals with each belt replacement. Finding that the red Erling seals were giving me about a 50/50 chance of leaking around the O.D. shortly after install, I've changed my philosophy to "replace only if leaking".

You must be doing something right. Just continue what you're doing in the way of oil and PCV maintenance. There are so many ways to screw up a seal replacement, it's no wonder people wanna blame the manufacturer.

Hello,

Use only OEM seals on the shafts. All my orange Elring seals seem to be leaking. Grrrrr!

When I built my 16V motor's bottom end (B230FT) I used a 'Goetze' gasket set from FCP. The crank seal and the intermediate shaft seal both leaked, and I had to pull the front end of the engine back off. Replaced with OEM seals from the dealership (not cheap) and no no more slight oil leaks flinging oil around the engine bay. Save a few bucks, do it twice. Face >>> Palm
