heavy duty rear springs for a 940 wagon 900 1994

i want to put a heavy duty set of coils in the rear of my 940 wagon. fcp sells a HD spring which is not a variable rate type. ipd sells a variable rate spring (for considerably more money). it was suggested in the FAQS that it would be necessary to upgrade the shocks as well. what shocks wouild be appropriate for this upgrade. anybody have an opinion on the subject of HD coils and shocks?

thanks, chris

I went with IPD"s springs and a pair of Boge Turbo Gas shocks. I wanted the Bilstiens, but didn't think my wife would appreciate it on her daily driver....

Anyway, the springs/shocks perform exactly as advertised, and I have no qualms about recommending them.

Not what you asked for but possibly another solution.

They are air inflatable and makes it unnecessary to replace the coils.
I've had a pair for about 10 years now and they still keep the pressure.
They have the advantage you can pump them up only when you need the additional capacity.
Mine came with a valve and a pressure indicator. I guess you could mount a small compressor in the car for inflating.

A Scary Thing - I.E.D. Overload Springs 900 1994

Hi,

I put Wagon oveload rear springs in my 1977 264. They are really scary over speed bumps. I still have the original shocks on the back. Make sure that you select shocks with adequate rebound damping to avoid, did a bomb just go off over that speed bump syndrome.

I installed IPD's Rear Over Load springs and Bilstein HD's in my 91 940SE wagon and love the improved ride height, handling and ability to carry a heavier load in the back of the wagon. Simple to install and not crazy expensive.....no regrets at all!

Hmm, interesting. I have wondered about the effects of those springs.
Also, he could peruse the boneyards for a factory set or even aftermarket set of double wound springs, I've seen 'em, but then they're never there when you want them.

thanks all for the responses. great input. i especially find the inflatables interesting because they can be deflated when you don't need them. i worry a little about ending up with a harsh ride with the HD springs.

thanks again!
chris
