Oil leak 200 1991

My oil seemed low about a week ago - it was at about the midpoint on the notched area on the dipstick. I drove about 800 miles and then went in for an oil change. They said it was very low (only showed up at the very tip of the dipstick) and found oil all over the underside of the hood and all around the engine compartment. They could not find any leaks anywhere and said it seemed like it was leaking at the oil cap. The cap was on tight. They changed the oil and cleaned up the spilled oil. I cleaned it even further myself and then drove about an hour. When I checked again, it seems like oil is leaking out around the cap. Can this happen? Should I replace the whole cap, or can I replace the rubber gasket? Could it be coming from somewhere else? Thanks.

Yup, probably a clogged flame trap (or spark arrestor). This happened to my car before I knew what a flame trap was. What a mess! Oil over the underside of the hood and the engine. The dipstick even blew out!

As mentioned it is probably leaking from not only the cap, but the flame trap itself, the dipstick and maybe the cam seal plug in the back of the head. Check the front seals too while you're at it.

The good news is any engine leaks you have will probably disappear after you clear the clog and get rid of the crankcase pressure.

You can definitely replace the rubber gasket. Have you cleaned your flame trap recently? Was there oil on the underside of your hood? If so, was it towards the front or rear of your engine? There are a few seals that can go bad, but I don't know of any that would go in the way you describe.

Sounds like you may have fine seals, but high crankcase pressure.

It is definitely leaking out around the oil cap. I've cleaned it completely twice now and after driving, there is oil all around where the cap goes on. Before, it was all over the underside of the hood right at the center and closest to the windshield. It doesn't seem to be spraying that far now, but I also haven't driven at highway speeds fro very long.

I went to cleanflametrap.com but all I could find was a tutorial on how to change the heater blower. I did several searches for spark arrestor and flame trap here but I couldn't find anything that helped me locate this thing . . .

Try this URL. The 700/900 cars have the same flame trap setup as the later 240's.

If the rubber gasket on the filler cap is hard, replace it, but that is only the first thing you need to do. The second thing to check is the rubber cam shaft plug at the back of the cylinder head, you'll have to feel for it. if it is missing it blew out and you just found a massive oil leak....

Now, what causes the oil filler cap to blow oil and the camshaft plug to blow out? Its called crank case pressure, normally caused by a plugged up spark arr ester. It is located between the third and fourth intake manifold runners, use the search function or check out cleanflametrap.com.

    Hope the above helps!

I couldn't find the rubber cam shaFt plug or the spark arester/flame trap. I did a search and checked cleanflametrap.com but it looked like it was for changing the blower motor.

It is definitely leaking out the oil cap though. I suppose I could take it in to the dealer but if cleaning the flame trap and checking the cam shaft plug is something an amateur (like me) could do, I'd rather try to do it myself. Just can't figure out where anything is.

In the following picture link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8498733@N02/3287940037/ which is of the back of the engine, you will see a black rubber round plug just below the valve cover, that is the rear cam plug. Sorry, I don't have a good pic of the flame trap but there is a black rubber tube about an inch thick on the firewall side of the throttle body that runs from the flex hose between the throttle body and the AMM. The other end of that hose goes to the flame trap that is between the third and fourth fuel injector.

        Hi djobryan

I had a similar problem as you have.

Found out that it can be quite a few things:

        1. Flame trap being blocked (wasn't blocked on mine)

        2. Oil trap box (that connects to the flame trap hose) being clogged - quite likely this on mine.

        3. 1 or 2 possibly causing the camshaft seal to eventually blow out thus leaking lots of oil everywhere.

I replaced the oil trap box, and all front seals and no more leaks! Oil level has stayed good.

        Regards
        Lucast
