EDTA and batteries.... 700

So I have a battery at the end of its useful life and don't mind damaging it, as it'll be replaced and recycled if it doesn't work.

Has anyone ever added EDTA to an old battery? What were your results?

I'm not recommending you do this. Please don't blind yourself playing with battery acid.

    EDTA and batteries.... 700

I add EDTA to all my new batteries unless they are 'sulfate-stop' type and have used it in 6V batteries with the best results. 6V batteries have never been improved since the 70s and would typically only last about a year. They usually have a 90 day warrenty. Adding EDTA makes some of them last much (4-5 years)longer. Whether the short lived ones have some other problem... I have not had much luck with adding it at the end of a battery's life. You could try it and put the battery on a Battery Tender type charger.

      Thanks Greg.

Last week, I cleaned the battery, popped the caps, cleaned some more (dirty car), and added some distilled water, then charged it on 10amps for 6 hours. It worked fine for several starts, then I ran it a little while and shut it off. A couple days later the car needed a jump. I can clean the terminals, but it's new battery time.

I couldn't find any EDTA locally, so I don't think I'm going to play with it too much.

    Will,

Why did you buy the EDTA? Was it for this purpose?

It might be better to buy a cheap recycled battery, then to mess with the lead.

I haven't bought it, I was just interested in trying to resurrect this older battery, and if I could do it for under twenty bucks, that would be nicer than a new battery. And If it doesn't work, no big loss.

The only purpose for the EDTA would be the battery. I guess I could put it in something or other as a preservative/pH buffer, but I don't plan to.
Where can one buy a recycled battery?

        Will,

Some fanatics eat EDTA to chelate lead from their bodies. I figure that might cause more problems then it solves.

Iron and copper work to reduce the toxic effects of lead on the blood.

Thamine has been shown to reduce the oxidation of Dopamine in-vitro.

Smokers who took vitamin C supplements absorbed less lead then controls.

Garlic has been shown to markedly reduce the lead content in various body tissues of goats.

        I like garlic.

EEeeeeh. I prefer EDTA in my shampoo, but not in my food.

I looove garlic. Sometime I'm going to roast a whole cluster of cloves and eat them whole. They get sweet and much milder once they're cooked.
I like oranges too. They go great with my Oatmeal stouts ;)
          Thiamine.. isn't that a B-vitamin?

            Will,

Speaking of citrus, my lemon tree bloomed. You can smell it through the whole house.

            Yes, Thaimine is Vitamin B1

Mmmm I bet that smells good. Not sure about lemons, but the best oranges I've ever had came from a friend's tree in their back yard about 3 towns back.

It is way past my bedtime.
