I have a 1996 960 with 203k miles. I posted a couple of weeks ago about a bad exhaust smell in the cabin when the car is sitting still idling. I also wanted to add that ever since the outside temperature has dropped here from 30s-40s to 10s-20s, the fuel economy has also dropped. It's been going down about 1 mpg per fuel up since end of November. I was getting 23-24 mpg, and it dropped to 22, then 21, then 20, now my latest fuel up showed 19 mpg.

In the previous post someone mentioned a bad O2 sensor. Are these symptoms indicative of a bad O2 sensor? It really does seem to be running rich. My exhaust smell has an extremely strong, gasoline smell. On cold mornings, the exhaust is white and heavy.

    Hello, Start with a compression test, if that is 170 or above go with a new temp. sensor. Then try a vacuum leak test. Also check your vapor solonoid valve for gas residue (wet), thats the black one with the two big hoses.

    May not be applicable but I had a 760T that had a similar problem. Turned out to be a broken T fitting in the vacuum line that fed the overpressure switch. It was under the dash. PITA to get to.

    The first thing I'd look for is an exhaust leak. It would facilitate the exhaust fumes entering the cabin, and if the leak is before the 02 sensor it could be sucking in fresh air leading the sensor to misread as a lean condition thus adding more fuel. Other possibilities could be a cold start enrichment gone awry, but I don't know enough about 960s to pinpoint what could cause that.
