Replacing carpet on 1989 DL, vendor suggestions

We just picked up Sven, a 1989 DL, one owner, one me hanic sin e new DL with 138,000. The tan carpet has an old stain from a leak of some sort and I want to replace it and get some sound deadening in there.

Are there any suggested vendors and / or vendors to avoid?

The original carpet is very high quality and responds well to aggressive cleaning. The results on tan can be mixed depending on how soiled they are.

Remove the carpet and turn it upside down. Beat the back side of the carpet to remove as much "stuff" dry. If you think you have all the particulates out of it try beating the back while over a piece of newspaper and you will most likely find more. It has been accumulating for 20 years.

I spot clean areas that look like they might be a result of grease next. I use lacquer thinner.

Next I use Spray and Wash over the entire surface. Heavier applications on dirtier areas.

I follow up with Blue Coral carpet cleaner. Spray a heavy coat over the entire surface. Let is soak. At this point you can use a nylon bristle brush and some water to scrub the dirtier areas, but don't rinse it off yet- apply some more Spray and Wash or carpet cleaner.

Take the carpet to a high pressure car wash and wash it with the soap setting before using the rinse setting. The carpet is very, very tough but pay attention to what you are doing as it is possible to damage it if you spend to much time with the wand too close to the pile.

Bring the carpet home and hang it up to dry. After it is dry turn it upside down again over newspaper and beat on the back. If you continue to get residue out of carpet you may need to make another trip to the car wash for a repeat performance.

    K,

There isn't a lot of demand for aftermarket carpet, especally for cars from the 70/80s.

If you buy generic carpet, you can cut and fit it up. It's not too hard.

I replaced my carpet using scraps that my parents were going to throw away after they recarpeted their house.
