Right Brake Light - Please Help (Need Inspection) 200 1992

I have a weird issue with my right brake light. The regular light comes on but the brake light doesn't work. When I twist the bulb holder however, the bulb lights up bright (as if the brake pedal was depressed). I have fiddled with it some but no success. The bulb warning light on the dash come on when I hit the pedal too. I have tried new bulbs and different holders all with the same results.

Thanks for your help.

Jon

First, do you have matching bulbs on both sides? Same type/brand?

If you haven't already, clean all the sockets and tighten the contacts as needed. How is your circuit board? Corroded? You can try cleaning that too (delicately), but if it is too far gone you'll need to replace it. Check and clean the ground wire at its attachment point.

My 90 sedan seemed to have on and off brake light issues the whole time I owned. Definitely not a strong point of these cars...

If this is a sedan is the bulb holder that is giving you problems white in color? I believe you have to have a white bulb holder in that postion.

Yes it is a white bulb. I will get a new holder and see how it goes.

      Thanks!

I was not suggesting that the bulb holder was bad, but rather checking to see that you had the correct one in place. There have been times when people have reported finding black bulb holders in that position.

I have suffered many times with this gremlin. The brake light holder plastic deforms from the heat of the bulb being on while the car is at stoplights. NOTHING can bring it back. You are going to need a new light, and no questions about it. Check FCP Groton for aftermarket replacements, order one (I'd suggest the pair), install them and pass inspection. They last for about 8-10 years, depending on your stop and go traffic.
    Cheers,

Do you have a sedan or wagon? Each has different weaknesses with the taillights, and the bulb sockets on the sedans are different for right side vs left side.
