I heard a loud BANG 200

As I pulled sharply out of the driveway this morning something definitely gave out! I heard a loud BANG on the driver's side and the steering pulled immediately to the right! I'm guessing inner tie rods, or outer or ball-joint. It's -16C and I'm gonna have to get it up and get under it. Could it be the strut mount? I drove the car around the block and it pulls way to the right. When I got back it's really tough to turn the wheel to the left. At first glance I can't see any thing obviously broken. I'm really dreading going out in the cold. So, any ideas?

:Looks like the coil springs slipped off or is broken!! I would post the pic if I knew how!

Now what?

I bet that the spring seat on your strut housing let go-- they are known to rust.

There are repair kits, but I think the simplest fix is to pull a strut assembly whole at a pick and pull and swap it.

Basically you pull the caliper, free the brake hard line to give yourself some wiggle room, pop the tie rod end, unbolt the ball joint and undo the three bolts on the strut tower (after marking them carefully first). The assembly will drop out.

It's -18C here this morning in Toronto, and that's before you factor in the wind, which is considerable. I hope you can find a garage to work in!

    Good luck!

I just got off the phone with Volvo-Guys in the city and they'll sell me the entire assembly for $65! I think for now just to get us back on the road I'm gonna go that route then look at replacement/upgrades when the weather's warmer and I can afford a few days without a car.

$65 sounds pretty good. Have you checked out StandardAutoWreckers.com in Scarborough, $50 all-you-can-carry weekends?

Anyhow, if you only need a spring, I'm pretty sure I have one rolling around. I'm at Dixie and Steeles.

Sounds like a great deal to me as you will not have to mess with removing the top nut and strut bearing which would require compressing the spring.

Are you familiar with marking the position of the top plate on the strut tower before removing the three nuts that hold it in position? By marking it and installing the replacement to the marks you can keep your alignment reasonably close.

If you have the time you might want to start now to see if the brake line is going to give you any trouble. Use a line wrench rather that an open end,

        Randy

Thanks for the reply Herb. I'm up in Caledon and it's pretty chilly! I don't think it's the strut housing that is if you mean #19 here http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=234742&ukey_make=865&ukey_model=11956&modelYear=1987&ukey_category=7868&ukey_driveLine=394&ukey_TrimLevel=11037&ukey_modelRange=0&searchString=

Looks like it's come away from up top, under the mount. Here's a link to the photo

I was thinking #19. I can't get to your flickr image, but if it isn't the spring seat, my next best guess is the mount. Having a quick look under the hood should tell you if this is the case-- sometimes when the strut mounts fail you end up with a dent in the hood where the assembly has protruded through the strut tower.

        Good luck!

The spring is definitely broken. Do I need to remove the strut mount in order to replace the spring? Or can I just drop the whole assembly outta the car replace the spring and off I go?

You unquestionably have a broken spring, consider yourself lucky that didn't happen at speed! If you are short on time and spring compressors, go with the entire replacement complete strut assembly. Whatever you do, don't undo the top center nut without a compressor retaining the spring... I suspect you already knew that.
