      The bearings seemed fine. After removing the old brush set so as to have no drag on the slip rings spinning the pulley by hand resulted in silent smoothness.

      I have to believe that the alternator was a replacement. The pick and pull car I got the unit from had 200K on it but the brushes were only worn down about half way and the slip rings were in great shape- not usually the case with high mileage.

        Great write up!

        The Denso's are pretty good units. As good as Bosch, I bet. I think our car got 300K miles out of the brushes...

        I wound up just swapping the whole alternator with a Bosch...

        I should get my Denso back online!

        I am about to do my Bosch alternator in the 95, but I will take it to my local auto electric shop. They do a nice job tearing it down, turning the commutator, adding a new regulator and new bearings, all for about $100.

    Inspired me to do my Bosch/940T, similar design but I found even easier, it's unnecessary to do the rolled paper trick. The reg is even more accessible and easily swappable, like the Bosch 7 alts, once you get the cover off.
    The brushes were almost gone so this is quite timely.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

      The counter man worked from the Volvo part number for the alternator 3544119 in my case. The brush set was JN50-52003. A brush set is $2.45; bare brushes available- 50 for $9.95

        Here it is six years later and with pure luck, these folks are still there. I ordered 3 sets of brushes via credit card.

        I talked to national ordering dept. Right away the parts person said it is missing a few numbers. Brush part number is JN50-1502003. Cost is about 4+ bucks now plus shipping.

        I also asked if they rebuilt alternators. Yes.
        Asked if they also turn the slip rings. No, for the rebuilding, they replace the whole interior rotor.

      When I got a set in 2/06 it was $8.82, at 20% off from Beechmont Volvo.

      Should have gone for two or three.
      Tasca's discount price is now $31.65, as of today.

      I think Randy found a generic number someplace.
