starting problem

Hi i'm having a problem once in a while starting my 740gle. I took the tank fuel pump relay apart a year ago and resoldered the terminals as some blogers had sugessted and it cured my problem. Now once in a while I'm having troubles starting again. I can hear the the tank pump running when I turn the key, but it won't start unless I spray starting fluid into the intake. From what I've read on this site there is a second fuel pump near the engine but I can't find it. Do you think this pump is bad or is there another relay. Any help is appreciated. Bob

Only one relay for the pumps. There is no independent tank pump relay. It controls both depending on the year. Main pump is under drivers area with fuel filter. FAQs covers jumpering the relay to see if it is relay or pump problem. No intank pump, car will still run. No main pump, car won't run.

Thanks Aleekat, I'll try jumpering the relay to see what happens. It only happens about every 20 or 30 times that I start the car so it will be a problem trying to get it while it's doing it's thing. But as I said , I can hear the pump run for a second when I turn the key on. Do you think it could be the fuel filter? Bob

I can't see a fuel filter can cause this so randomly. It's either clogged or it isn't. You didn't give a year but if you have one, radio suppression relay comes to mind.

Thanks Aleekat, The year is a '90. Where would the radio suppression relay be and what does it have to do with fuel. My thinking about the fuel filter is that over night dirt has time to fall away from the filter element so it starts, but when I shut it off for a few minutes to go in a store it clogs the element and does'nt have time to fall away. Just a wild guess. Bob

After all the yrs visiting this board I can't recall anyone haven't this issue and the filter was the problem. Run these tests:
            http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineFuelinjection.htm#FuelPumpandFIRelayDiagnosticTests

When you say fails to start sometimes, how often? Hot/cold engine? Some RSR are located around the coolant expansion tank. There two relays, one controls the electric fan. They are interchangable. Since you repaired the fuel pump relay once, I would look that direction.
