Cold (and I mean cold) start nightmare 700 1987

Hi, all.

My '87 744T is the most cold-blooded beeotch I've ever driven. Cold starting is very difficult. Symptoms as follows:

Temps somewhere around -17 to -20 F (-27 to -30C)
Car is plugged in. Block heater is functioning, hoses are warm.
Car cranks for almost a minute before firing.
Car stumbles and dies.
Car starts again almost immediately, runs normally, heats up quickly, all is well.
Problem is substantially diminished in warmer weather, but still present.

It acts very much like it isn't getting any fuel. The battery is good, if a bit overburdened by all that cranking. Is it possible that the fuel is draining out of the system and back into the tank?

Ideas?

Thanks,

Dan

Not a troll, pal - just crazy busy. Perhaps you're a sensitive little flower, eh? 8v)

Thanks to all. When it isn't nut-shrinkingly cold out there, I plan on following up.

Dan

Read the other anwers, and I would wonder "where to look for air leak?"

My first suspect would be the accordion air hose between the MAF sensor and the throttle body. Leaks I have found have been on the bottom side, always invisible until the hose was removed and checked from the inside.

Quick and temp fix is a tight wrap of electrical tape, on a well-cleaned hose. That tape can get down into the grooves. Proper fix is a new hose.

Good Luck,

Bob

May I suggest you be VERY VERY careful about the quantity of starting fluid you use , the less the better as it will kill your engine so I have heard
Good luck,
Dave
PS . i agree you probably have an air leak

I don't know much about your fuel injection system, but I second the idea of getting
a can of starting fluid and spraying some on the aircleaner before cranking.

Hi,

You have an air leak. This is leaning out the mixture and causing your trouble.

Check or replace all gaskets and hoses on the intake manifold.

You can use starting fluid in emergencies to start the engine instantly.
