Setting up HIF6 carb on 122 Aluminum Intake 120-130

I picked up a set of HIFs for my 122 to replace my very worn out HS6s. I got them running today, but can't figure out how to use the HIF throttle shaft (the double ball one) on the aluminum intake. The HS6 shaft works great, but only has one ball. How do people setup their HIF in their 122? How about the choke cables too!

I figure if I could find a double ball end setup, I could cut off the ball on the HS6 throttle shaft, and drill a hole in the lever where the stock ball end is located to mount a double ball end setup.

The 164 and many of the 140s only have chokes on one of the two carbs. That will work OK
on the aluminum manifold for starting. I usually have the mixture rich enough that I
don't need the choke for very long.
I used the black filter box like yours.

I've done a few of those....the best way is to cut the arm at the same distance on both, and weld the double ball on the end of the original arm. It's important to ensure that the arm is centered fore and aft between the two carbs to ensure the opening rate is the same on each carb.
If you don't have access to welding ( I use a torch )then you can cut the single ball arm off right below the ball, and the double ball one at the kink. Then you have enough to overlap the two arms, and drill two holes for nut and bolt assembling. Use red loctite if you do this.
The choke cables clip on to the bodies like the later HS6, and the wire passes through the retained clamps on the fast idle arms.
Nice upgrade!

This is how it ended up. I welded a single ball arm from a B21F throttle onto the stock single ball arm of the HS6:

Not pretty, but works.

The geometry looks great Paul. It should work well.
If you need any help with tuning the set just write me from the website. I'm happy to assist. www.sucarburetors.com

Got the double ball setup. I used a lever arm/ball from a B21 Kjet. Cut it down and welded it up to the stock HS6 linkage. I'll post a picture when I clean it up a bit (I'm a lousy welder).

Got the car running, and took it for a drive. Big difference between worn out HS6s and nice HIFs. I'm sure I'm getting better gas mileage.

I'm using a K&N filter that IPD sells for the Djet/kjet manifolds. Fits prefectly (but need to clean it).

I just got another set of HIFs that were rebuilt by Island Automotion (Rhys company), which were never mounted since the rebuild (they were a bargain for $150). Looks really nice, I like that you welded up the butterfly valves to get rid of that relief valve (or whatever it's called).

The choke is setup, but not very nice, will deal with that when I install the rebuilt carbs. Waiting on some phenolic spacers.

Should I setup some tubing for the overflow valves (I think they're called that?):

Springs for the airbox? Anybody figure out something better. Every person I talk to says all the springs are missing from every box.

How many springs do you need Paul? I've got a few around somewhere. As for hooking up the vents to a charcoal canister, I've got some pictures of my setup somewhere as well. I'll dig them out if you're interested. I've never been able to post photos on this board, but I can email them to you.
As an aside, Rhys, you'll be seeing my setup when I drop in with Veronica in June.

Cheers,

Barry-

I have the choke springs, but the cables don't fit into them.

I would like to know how you setup the charcoal canister. Please send me some photos (malloy1__at_prodigy-dot__net). I do have some 1800 canisters.

Paul

Paul:

I misunderstood. I thought you were looking for the springy things that clamp that the 2 halves of the airbox together.
I'll dig through my files for those canister filter photos and get them off to you this morning.

Cheers,

Yes!! Springy thingy for the airbox!!! I do need!!!

I totally missed it! I'm asking too many questions!

I'm missing all four springs and one of the braces. If you have some, please contact me (malloy1 __at_prodigy_dot__net

Hi Paul;
You did get a good deal!
The valves in the throttle plates are decel valves or as the English call them "bypass" valves. They leak and cause an unstable idle.
The hot start valves should have a hose on the brass tube to direct any liquid fuel that may appear if the needle valve sticks or the float sinks, away from the engine. Leave the end open to the atmosphere. That valve is actually used to vent the float chamber, alternately to the front face of the carb at high rpm, and to the charcoal canister at idle.
Unless you live where it's really hot in the summer, the phenolic spacers are not needed.
Rhys
