My new to me 1993 940 turbo started smoking today. smokes only at idle but noticed on highway it lost power. any ideas?

    Check for a hole in the diaphragm in the compressor bypass valve-- I had the symptoms you describe. The diaphragms are a little hard to find (there was someone in Taiwan selling them on e-bay for about $40 a while back), but I have had luck patching holes with RTV after carefully cleaning the diaphragm.

    My experience with blown turbos has been large clouds of oil smoke at all throttle positions- not just at idle.

    Loss of power? As in bogging down when turbo is called on for boost?
