taiilights parts update 200

So looks like Volvo used sell replacement lenses for the 6 panels taillights.I got some from fellow Brickboarder and Turbobricker 83GLT.I now know why they stop making these things.I worked on one taillight for about 30 min.and I'm still not done. You have to be real careful in removing ALL of the old broken lens along with any of the glue.It is tricky getting into the corners with a knife, blade, file, etc. Also very hard not to touch the reflector. The other worry is in trying to dislodge the old lens without breaking anything else.I think I need to trim the replacement a bit to get a tighter fit towards the center.I also will be removing MORE of the old glue until the edges of the old lamp are silver in color with the hope that the new lens will fit very tight against the housing.I'm going to list the part numbers and hope it is ok with 83GLT.It is a bit of work but if the rest of the lamp is fine it is worth the effort.Hey we resolder relays and try to save other parts so why not the taillight!I'm also posting a link to photo bucket to show you my progress. If anyone knows how to post the pics on here be my guest.

If it helps, when I did my taillight I was able to actually dislodge and pull out the clear reflector. You should see two grooves that it slides into. Mine slid out ok after some gentle wiggling/tugging, etc. I don't know if it's possible on earlier lights (mine was on the '93). Removing the reflector made it much easier to get into the crevices, etc.

Amazing! I'd have said this was impossible.

A lot of work but some reward.I still need to buy some silicone.Funny I'm looking at the instructions from Volvo and on the last page it say " The new glass may protrude slightly compared to with the original glass. This has no significance on the sealing or function." I don't think so!This is exactly what I am trying to avoid, the lens sticking out a bit because I can see that it will not seal properly if it isn't tight.I think this why they stoppped making these things. If poorly done it will leak, much easier to sell a new taillight.

I agree with you. The amazing part is that they ever did sell the pieces, given the originals were welded. But like "83GLT" says "RARE" ... "NOS". It hints at just how much they were paying their vendor (Cibie) for these lamps, because surely that is who also supplied the parts!

Thanks for bringing these to everyone's attention. As self-serving as this post may be, I've repaired my '93 taillight using one of these replacement lenses with great success. I made sure to break out as much of the lens as possible, by hand where possible, and used quite a sharp chisel to get the rest. The whole process took me about 30-40 minutes, and I made sure to use enough silicone to ensure a good seal, following the instruction pamphlet closely - I even used the Volvo kind that comes with the reverse lens repair kits, not that it would make a difference. It definitely requires some elbow grease and concentration, but I found it to be a satisfying little project that cost less than sourcing a replacement taillight. In the end I noted that as the Volvo instructions stated, the replacement lens did stick out about 1/16", but it was flush with the interior housing and sealed just fine - (so I don't know if the replacement lens is larger?). It's been about 6 months or so and I haven't noticed any leakage or other problems.
