Feeler for Instrument Cluster Bulbs 200

I'm thinking of manufacturing halogen bulbs for illumination of the earlier style instrument clusters, back to 81 for the 240s. I've always been annoyed by how dim they are prior to the halogen bulbs showing up in 89. These should fit 7/9 sockets too. What say, drivers of Swedish iron? Interested?

I think I can do us better on the later halogen bulbs with base too. I'm looking at brighter "peanut" bulbs as well.

    Dave,

Please note that at 236K miles, the cluster lighting on our 92 started to fade, not go out, just fade. Upon disassembly, it was obvious that the white reflective plastic had deformed and discolored from the heat of the halogen bulbs. The clear prism was also deformed.

The solution I used was two 1 watt white LEDs and a current source to drive them. Mods were needed to the prism (hole drilling) to accommodate the 1W LEDs. The following link to a picture is on the old style prototype cluster, note that the passenger side is a bit dim since I broke the prism on that side. Here is the link: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8498733@N02/5685090809/in/photostream

The same mod worked perfectly on the 92 cluster, I normally run it at 50% brightness at night which is twice as bright as the original halogen bulbs. If you want details let me know, I'm willing to share the thermally "cool" solution to the lighting problem.

Higher power halogen bulbs will just melt the cluster.

David--not to put a damper on any financial venture--but the easy solution for the early dash is to just pierce the tinted strip--small holes will do--to maintain the green glow, but brighter. ---Dave

    Hi Dave,

If you find 3W capsules, that would be great. I've shied from using 5W in the cluster -- afraid to melt stuff.

      Hi Art,
I ran the 5s for about twenty-five hours in situ, no visible effects, but I admit to being a little concerned also. Ratings and measurable output, as with many bulbs, seems to be a little...hmm, not sure what word to use. Subjective?

      Cheers Mr. B!
