sputters and dies after 175-200 miles 200 1989

and If I let it sit for about 5 minutes, it will crank and go again. This afternoon after 140 miles, it did it again (and again) and I am at a loss to which way to go first.

I have another fuel pump relay, and coil or could it be the ecu going? It acts like it is electrical, because it goes so far, then like it heats up ... then will cool down and go again, but not as far the following times. I have found in previous posts that the ecu usually just won't let it start at all (it does have the pink label). I checked the 25 amp fuse under the hood and it was not corroded or anything. We have a fresh tune up, cleaned throttle body, ICM and flame trap. Fianl guess is the fuel pump itself -- -but I dunno .

Any advice will be appreciated;

randyB

Basted on the information in your first sentence my vote is for the CPS. Failing when hot and starting when cooled down is one the classic CPS failure modes.

That's my guess,

Might be the ignition amplifier heating up? The small heat sink do-dad on the fender well. Could be some infrequent CPS anomaly, the sensor on the bell housing, and easy fix (usually). But I like the fuel hose if you mean you fill 'er up, drive half a tank and sputter at the half tank point.

I'm with Bob on this one, the next time it quits check for spark before it cools off. If there is not spark replace the power stage ignition amplifier.

If after 200 miles it stalls and then from there on until you gas up it stalls then I would look at Jorrel's suggestion. 'A crack in the in-tank fuel line'
That hose is about at teh 1/2 tank line... that would put you in that 175-200mile ballpark.

If it gets fussy after a long drive even after you just gassed it up, I would agree, it sounds like electrical. Maybe the Power unit behind the Drivers side tail light (on the fender) it need sto be heatsunk to teh fender. It is a Power stage screwed to a heatsink that is screwed to the fender. Make sure the hardware is intact so the power stage is connected to the fender. You might want to disassemble and put Thermal grease between power stage and heatsink.

If you have a spare fuel pump relay, I'd throw it in and see how that works for you.

Next time it stalls. get out and check teh 25 amp fuse. see if it's very hot. it may appear clean but...maybe not

before throwing more parts at it, find out why it's dying. is it running out of fuel or spark? could be the speed sensor, fuel pump relay, maybe fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, etc. good luck, chuck.

This sounds a lot like a crack in the in tank fuel pump and the tank flange. Remove the flange and pull the pump, even if you don't see a crack in that short piece of hose, replace it.
