'87 740T clutch not releasing 700 1987

Almost 200,000 miles. Recently it has been occasionally difficult to get the shifter into first gear. Today while shifting I noticed the clutch pedal lost it's springiness. When I took the car out of gear I had a difficult time getting it back in. I finally got it back in gear but with the clutch fully depressed the car still moves forward so I know it's still engaged. Where do I start my investigations? Thanks for any assistance.

744T clutch not releasing - Problem found 700 1987

The responses I received were helpful. I checked for brake fluid loss first. I didn't find any bad leaks, only a little wetness by the clutch slave unit. I removed the clutch slave and found a broken spring inside. I ordered a new one from partsgeek.com because my local place here in Portland (ipd) doesn't seem to carry them.
I would also have changed out the clutch master but it seems fine & I only need to get a few more years out of the car. I only drive about 3000 miles a year. The cost of a new clutch master seemed too high. I would prefer to just change out the piston seal at that price but don't know where to find just the parts.

check the fluid level. i'm betting there's a leak. check the carpet for brake fluid leaking from the master cyl. look at the bellhousing and see if it's dripping brake fluid. if you need 1 cylinder, replace both. they tend to age at the same rate. good luck, chuck.
