I just bought a beautiful '82 242. When the engine is cool, I can engage the O/D and as long as I don't push it, the car cruises along happily. If I have to go up a hill, or get off the gas to slow down, I can feel it slip. As it warms up, it seems to engage less and less.

It's heat-related, and I've looked at a lot of the O/D threads. I figured I'd check the connections, and I have an '84 with the same unit that works like a charm so I can just switch them if needed. I have access to a lift, and transmission jack. But lately, I've noticed a shuddering in 2nd gear when accelerating, and I'm wondering if it's the O/D, the clutch, or both?

Any suggestions on determining whether I need to do the clutch, too?

If so, any suggestions on which clutch, where to buy?

If anyone has a similar problem, it turns out it was a couple of things, but not the clutch.

The O/D needs an overhaul, but the shuddering was the center bearing on the driveshaft needing to be replaced.

The clutch will slip when you step on it in 4th or in OD. The engine will rev with no acceleration.

Before you go tearing into a clutch, remove the OD solenoid, clean it and replace its internal O-rings.

OD operation fine when cold then progressivly worse when warm usually indicates worn actuating piston O-rings.

But when a slippage stating with second gear is pressent, the OD solenoid is the place to start troubleshooting. Fluid pushed past interanl seals locks the OD on whihc creats a situation where the OD is on without power to the solenoid.

The OD has enough pressure to move internal parts at about 15MPH. If the solenoid is ON, The OD will slip as it trys to freewheel and direct drive at the same time.

Sounds like clutch....At a stop put it in 1st drop the clutch...odes it satll fast or mor elike slow down down quickly and stall. If it doesn't stall immediately, clutch.
