89 240dl intermittent starting problem 1989

I have owned an 89 240DL, gasoline, only 190,000km for last 2 years. Problem is...Car has always started first try but on occasion, maybe 5 or 6 times on separate occasions, it will crank but not fire or turn over and start. The only common factor seems to be that this happens after several short trips starting several times, or like the other day when it was close to 30 degrees celsius and car was only off for 30 minutes before trying to start again. Just wouldn't fire at all for several tries. Thought it wasn't going to go until it finally fired and started. When I pressed the gas pedal after it had started it made a nasty squealing sound for a few minutes (only when accelerator was pressed). Car started fine after sitting overnight. My question, is this just one of this car quirks or should I be concerned? Any ideas?

    89 240dl intermittent starting problem 1989

    You have some good suggestions on the no-start problem; the loud scream under acceleration sounds like a failing crank pulley/harmonic balancer. Check the FAQ. I just replaced one on a 740 and it wasn't too bad, but then again I have the crankshaft holding tool.

    Hello,


    Replace the fuel pump check valve. The heat may generate enough vapor pressure to empty the supply line, if the valve has failed.

    rhaire is correct. the '89 was the first year that Volvo installed the "shoulda just stayed home" feature. Chris, Welcome to the Site. we are just breaking your chops.

    I have made it my standard starting procedure to always turn the key to the 'ON' position, listen for the Fuel pumps to cycle for a second, then go ahead and turn the key to Crank the Starter.
    This insures proper Fuel Pressure at the injectors as well as letting me hear that the Fuel Pump is functioning.
    I'm wondering if your in-tank pump has failed and you get a Vapor lock situation on hot days or on quick stops and starts.
    The other things rhaire mentioned are inexpensive good maintanence items to go through as well. If you never replaced the Crank positioning Sensor.. It will come up to bite you someday.

    Are you having any overheating issues with this car? A very hot engine will possibly Crank slow and be hard to start.

      Thanks for the help. The car has been starting fine since but the weather has been cooler. Should be interesting to see how it starts when it warms up a bit. I did look under the hood yesterday and found the flexible metal pipe, which leads from the bottom of the rad into the lower part of the engine on the passenger side, had fallen off. I reattatched it and tightened the clamp. Not sure how long that's been off or what effect it would have by being off. Heck, I can't even find anywhere in my Haynes manual what that hose/tube is called or it's function. My research has pointed me towards some routine maintenance; change air filter and fuel relay switch. So far I have never had a problem with overheating.

        That Flex Pipe goes under teh radiator and into teh Air Filter Box. It will not affect anything.
        Many of us take it off. When it works as intended it is supposed to help warm the engine up faster in an attempt to help the Emissions. In reality it is useless. I see my gauge climb at the same pace, as I drive through my Neighborhood, the same with or without it.
        There is a Thermostat in the Air box that stops the flow of hot air as it gets very hot, .. If it goes bad ( and they do) this hot air from the Exhaust manifold continues to run past the AMM and puts undie strain on the electronics in the AMM. Maybe fixing yours wasn't a great idea

    89 240dl intermittent starting problem 1989

    Its a factory design feature to reduce your carbon footprint. Studies show that roughly 20% of all car trips are unnecessary, or worse, just a darn bad idea. It is you car trying to inform you that you probably should stay home. In case I am wrong, highly unlikely, you might want to look into re-newing the fuel pump relay, cleaning the fuse holder by the battery, or replacing the crank position sensor. These are all pretty inexpensive things to do that cause the no start.
