Radio Signal Strength 200 1990

So i recently bought a 1990 240 dl and i love it! drives great runs great super comfortable not too bad on gas not too bad on pick up...only thing thats not so great is that i dont get great radio signal so i get static, and sometimes its alot and sometimes a little. my question is, if i put a new sterio (which there already is an after market alpine which is pretty nice, but still not recently installed) would this improve the quality of listening to radio (FM, AM), or would replacing the antenna make any difference?

I would expect an antenna to become disconnected rather than broken. Get to the back of the radio and see if disconnecting the antenna makes a difference in the amount of static.
Does the static vary while the vehicle is not moving ? That indicates something wrong with the radio.
