For the first time my 940 trans (80000 miles) made an odd "whirling" sound when going uphill at about 10 MPH and also when coming back down the hill- same speed. The weather has just turned cold. It was not super loud but just new. I'll try to record it and post. But any ideas? It kinda reminded me of the sound the chimp makes in the Tarzan movies when the chimp sees a tiger, if that helps.

With 80k your transmission should be practically NEW and pristine unless some awful things had happened to it previously. I wouldn't sweat a minor unexplained noise once in a while -- it may not even be the transmission. I find myself often "imagining" problems trying to be finely tuned into the car's every moan and groan.

Our transmission (four cars) all have different sounds. My recommendation? Drain and flush the fluid per FAQ instructions, then let it sit there. If it breaks, install a used transmission. Don't obsess over the noises unless something is clearly wrong. And don't even THINK about a "rebuild." Stay far away from AAMCO et al.

Sounds good to me. If it gets louder I'll post the sound. I have only heard it again for a few seconds.
