convert 122 pedal to cable clutch? 120-130

So I've searched, but couldn't find a good answer as they were all mostly dealing with the difficulties of switching the tranny side to cable clutch.

I have a M410 tranny that I took out of a 72 145 (not original tranny obviously) I was planning on putting it in my 67 122, but we didn't realize until we got it out that it would be impossible to swap the bellhousing like we planned. My mechanic wants me to try to sell the tranny and buy an M41, but I'm wondering how hard it would be to just replace the pedal and switch to cable and if it would be worth it.

I'd rather not have to deal with finding another tranny if I don't have to as the M410 is in very good shape and I'd like to just use it. I've seen some generic clutch pedals for sale online (not volvo) and am wondering if it would be easy to make it work.

Thoughts?

I did this tranny swap to my 67 and ended up turning the slave cylinder around by making a new bracket and resleaving the cylinder so it would move the fork sufficiently. The end result is while it works ok, it is a heavy clutch to operate . At the time i didnt want to put a cable in it and i cant remember why . I would probably try a cable next time and am very interested in Erics suggestion of a hydraulic throwout bearing. David

I think the correct way to convert over to a cable clutch is to replace the pedal box and pedals. '68-on 122s would have the cable box that would fit (would need to cut the hydraulic box out and and weld in the cable box). I think an 1800 pedal box would also work.

Hello,

You can now buy a universal hydraulic throw out bearing.

You will have to custom fit it to the inside of the M410 and have a custom clutch hose made, but this will way easier and cheaper to do than to do a PROPER job of converting to a cable clutch.

interesting, could you elaborate on the universal hydraulic throwout bearing?

Here are two solutions.
The first is mine, using a pull type slave. It works very well
The second is a photo I found on the internet with a modified pedal box.

Can you give me more details on how you did yours? Like what slave you used and if you used the stock master, or if you had to use something else. I know the diameters have to be set up correctly in order to allow for sufficient throw and easy enough pedal operation.

I appreciate the pictures they help a lot.

The master cyl is stock.
Several companies make the slave cyls. The one I'm using came from a VW performance shop, I believe it is a C&N. The photo is of a slave from Speedway, it was on ebay and cheap-a mistake. After it blew a seal I found that it isn't rebuildable.
I made the bracket from angle iron which is bolted to the engine via the trans support.
The photo shows the first fitting, I have since turned the slave around so only the rod moves, instead of the whole slave.

thanks,

what diameter is the slave you're using? Do you know how much travel is needed?

The model I have is a "CNC"
I believe the diameter is 7/8"
The stroke is about 1 1/4"
That is plenty of stroke to release the clutch, after it releases I still have about 2" of pedal travel.
Wilwood makes one with a little longer stroke but I don't think it is necessary.

Thanks, I think this is the route I'm going to go unless I find a good M41 nearby. What did you do about the lines going to the slave? Did you have to have them made somewhere or can you buy them?

I used the stock hose to the slave. On the first go-around I had it set up so the entire slave would move when I actuated the clutch. I later reversed the connections and turned the slave around so only the actuator arm moved. I should have done it that way to start with.

Oh I was thinking you'd need a custom hose to go from the tubing to the
slave, that's awesome the stock hoses will work. Thanks for all your help,
I really appreciate it.

Thanks, do you know if any of the mounting bases will work for the M410? It looks like they're all for US trannys

No idea, another suggest would be like Ryan (use to hangout at TB, but I haven't seen him post anything for years) did using a hydraulic clutch from a 122/1800 on his M410:
