122S Temperature Gauge. 120-130

Has anybody had any luck with the 122s temp. gauge. After several failed attempts at replacements & accuracy, I am starting to lean toward a good quality aftermarket unit. I would hate to overheat.

    122S Temperature Gauge. 120-130

    I built an electric T gauge using one from a 240 cluster and a 240 sensor, and I gutted the 122 T gauge and used the faceplate and backplate. The needle of the 240 is a little thicker and doesn't come to a point, but works great.

        Here's Huke's solution:

        From the 240 cluster, use the gauge (not the spaces), the voltage regulator, and the resistor (not sure if it's needed, but it's in the circuit). I used circuit board (the fiberglass type without any printed metal on it), and sandwich the backplate with two of the boards to keep it from shorting out. I finished it up with encasing the back with silicon. It's been running in my 122 for about 8 years without a problem. The temperature sensor should be the same for the 240 and the 140s.

    They are a little squirrely and for reasons not clear to me they sometimes show temps HIGHER
    than what actually exists.
    They can be repaired fairly easily if just leaking, by refilling the bulb with ether and soldering the tube up. There are companies that do this.

      Thanks George, Mine will go all the way to hot then move back down then repeat. I will look at one of my spares as far as repairing it.

        Sounds to me like your thermostat is sticking. I'd put in a new one first.
        They are cheap enough.

          Thanks George, It sounds like an easy enough fix if that is the problem. I don't think so though because the engine is actually never hot. Worth a try.

            Unless something is sticking in the gauge itself, normally constant temp will NOT give
            a fluctuating reading. Even if the indicated temps are not correct I'll bet the temps
            are really going up and down.
            You could do the unthinkable and actually put a thermometer in the top of the radiator
            and see what it really is.

              Ok George, I did the unthinkable and screwed in an aftermarket temp gauge my son has on his shelf (a hard nut to unscrew with the head bolt in the way.) and the temperature once warmed up ran a consistant 190 with a 195 while pulling hills. It's gotta be the gauge.
