Tip for replacing 940 fuel filter 900 1992

Thought I'd pass on how I changed the fuel filter on my 940 in case it helped anyone. I was changing the center support bearing and since it was up on jackstands, I decided it was a good time to change the fuel filter. This was my first fuel filter change on this car but I had done several on 240s. The first thing I noticed was that it only had a banjo fitting on one end. The other end was a combination of several fittings that went straight into the end of the filter. I couldn't see anything that would let me turn the line side without twisting it so I would need to hold the line while rotating the filter. Everything was pretty rusted up and corroded which indicated the need to proceed with caution. The filter was pretty loose within the bracket, it turned easily.

I previously had figured out that an impact wrench was a great tool for loosening the fittings on the 240. I was able to get an impact wrench onto the front banjo fitting with an extension and knuckle. I put on open end wrench on the line on the back. Banjo bolt spun out nicely. Then I went to a bigger socket that fit the shoulder on the filter and used it to loosen the filter from the line on the back end. Reassembly was the reverse....

Impact wrench save the day on this.

Tip for replacing 940 fuel filter 900 1992

Before my Volvos,245 s& 745 & 945 I had an 87 ford Super van w a straight 6,,,it had fuellines that snapped on to the filter that the v70 s use which hs no bolts only a plastic fitting that rides over a steel tube w a little bump,,& is fastened w plastic U clips..I think next time I change the filter I ll just get fuel lines off a Ford or V70/s70 to do away w those copper seals!!

Update: Tip for replacing 940 fuel filter 900 1992

    Hi,
Wanted to update/correct what I said in the original post.

Just bought a 940 wagon and changed the fuel filter in it. Finally figured out how Volvo intended thsi to be done (which I probably shouldn't have missed the first time). The fuel tank side of the filter has a fitting at the end of the line which does turn against and separate from an adapter which screws into the filter. This time I was able to turn the fuel line fitting and separate it from the adapter. I removed the adapter after removing the filter from the car.

My previous technique will work but is probably unnecessary.

    Lyle

Update: Tip for replacing 940 fuel filter 900 1992

I need to replace the fuel filter of my 1995 Volvo 940. When you replace your filter, did you also replace the washer/o-ring as well?
