Fuel Sending Unit 700

I have an 85 740. When through all the FAQ articles. Pulled a unit from an 89 with screw collar. Mine unit has nuts holding it in place. Has anyone been able to make the 89 fit mine? Haven't completely pulled mine yet, but looking at pics from the haynes manual. It does look different than the 89.

It won't work. The one on the left is the 85 unit. On the right, 89. 85 filler hose goes directly into the tank. 89 unit goes into the sending unit. Anyone need an 89, $11 plus shipping.

Thanks, would switching out the entire gas tank from the 89 and replacing the 85 (I have an 86) work? I figure it will be easier to get the 89 one at the junkyard. Or is it easier to rebuild the 85 (86?) one that resembles the 240 series?
          Thanks,
          el Raidman

I'm not sure. Mine 85 is metal, and the 89 I looked at was plastic. Didn't measure to see if it would fit or how it attaches. I got the sending unit to work outside the tank, but not in. So need to run the fuel down again and see if I can figure out why outside but not inside.

              Fuel Sending Unit Update 700

Finally got it working. Replaced some wiring that was crumbling. Float arm rides on a resistor board. Reflowed some solder on the board. And the big fix. Float was full of fuel. Drilled a small hole in the float. Drained the fuel out of it. Then held it under water and found a small hole in the seam. Used some J-B Stik to seal both holes and the seams. Good to have a working gauge again.
