Volvo Made an upgraded non-turbo exhaust. 700 1990

Its time to replace my original stock exhaust on my 1990 740GL. I was going to put a Starla Cat-back kit on due to cost. However, I liked the idea of the IPD upgraded non-turbo exhaust but didn't like the $318 price for what amounts to a turbo exhaust with a flange to adapt the larger OD/ID of the turbo exhaust. I started looking around and the general concensus is that the genuine Volvo kits are much more durable. I called Tasca and checked on the cost of a Turbo kit and was going to have a local muffler shop make an adapter for me. Total cost for the kit plus shipping was around $270 not including the cost to make an adapter. Let's say maybe $300 total? Now we were in the same neighborhod of the IPD kit.

On a whimm, I decided to call my local Volvo dealer and check their price on the turbo exhaust kit. I told the parts rep what I was doing and he says: "You know, Volvo made a kit about 8 or 9 years ago that was a step up from a stock exhaust and bolted directly on to the non-turbo cars". Apparently they are still availble but you have to have a record of the old service bulletin to find the kit. He had no part number for me but did have the bulletin. Total cost with tax was about $275. This might be the way to go if you can find the kit. If I do buy it, I'll report back with further details.

Volvo Made an upgraded non-turbo exhaust. (lifetime warranty on dealer kits) 700 1990

I'd be interested to hear what that part number is for my own records if you are able to find it (on the bill, box, etc). Thank you very much for posting this info!

Of note, and this may save you some money down the road, Volvo used to offer a lifetime warranty on their replacement exhaust kits. I am sure this was the case back in 2001, 2002, etc, but I do not know if this policy continues today. I'll give an example: Someone buys a Volvo new or used, drives it till the exhaust rusts away, then buys an exhaust kit from the dealership, and the replacement kit has a lifetime warranty and every kit needed there-after is free. Due to the high quality of the exhaust kits from Volvo, they didn't expect to pay out too often on that warranty, and expected you to sell the car before another kit would be needed. Again, I don't know if this policy is still in effect, but it's worth investigating.

God bless and have a great day,
Fitz Fitzgerald.

That is a good suggestion Fitz. I'm sure this is the original exhaust however, as this car has been in Florida its whole life. I will certainly report back if and when I buy the kit and also let you know if the lifetime warranty is in place. I have to drop the tranny and replace the rear main seal before I move forward on the exhaust. I just replaced the driver's side window regulator today and found that every site that sells one (EEuro, FCP,
etc.) had been misrepresenting the actual unit in their pictures (showing a plug and play replacement where the actual available part requires wire splicing). It seems that the production of these units has gone to second tier manufacturers that want to fit a broader base of vehicles. I don't know if you can even get a genuine Volvo regulator at the dealer any longer.

Take Care
