The Bentley copy of the overall is enough to cause blindness. There are enough posts on this interlock for the 91-92 model, but very little on yours, so I'm hesitant to say, even if the electrical is the same circuit, that colors, and especially connectors, were kept in the external solenoid version.
Regarding the time period for that ad, could be way earlier, given my non-photographic memory. The point is, no vehicle is designed with the kind of longevity some of us get and expect from these 240s, especially those 19 years into the series. A "good design" for you and me might be a poor design indeed for the manufacturer, and employer of engineers. A good design might be the 72-month car battery that fails in 7 +/- 1 years. The Interstate that works after 12 years might eventually force them to build in China.

Fifty-one years ago, Herman James, a North Carolina mountain man, was drafted by the Army. On his first day in basic training, the Army issued him a comb. That afternoon the Army barber sheared off all his hair. On his second day, the Army issued Herman a toothbrush. That afternoon the Army dentist yanked seven of his teeth. On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap. The Army has been looking for Herman for 51 years.
