Curious, what do scrap buyers pay for a junk Volvo in your area? 200

I'm scraping a very rusty 80 262c.Called a couple of places and was told the same amount $300 free towing. They all ask what type of car and come back with the same amount.I guess volvos don't have that much "good" metal on them. The car still has the v6,tranny,rear end, etc.I'm in NYC.I may just take it but I thought scrap was higher.

A savvy scrapyard might give you more if they knew your 80 Bertone had an original cat on it. The roadside signs around here say $300+ for junk cars towed free.

Milt Famie was a pitcher for the Cubs. Unfortunately, he had a great fondness for beer. After walking several successive batters in the 9th inning, the manager of the opposing team turned to one of the batters asking what that was all about. Said the batter "It was the beer that made Milt Famie walk us."

1979 242 GT to Taylor's Junkyard on St. Charles Rock Road in good 'ol St. Louis, MO in mid 2001.

I called around and researched it, seeking buyers if they could deal with the rust. That poor thing was well infected behind the passenger seat. The floor pan that cover the top of the rocker panel space was well rusted away on the passenger side when you removed the interior panel below the window next to the rear seat.

In spite of Brentwood Volvo and West County Volvo in St. Louis, and when living in St. Louis, you see Volvos a-plenty, but the reflex of a flood of salt brine and salty roads making your Volvo a very salty pretzel (is making me thirsty) with a single snow flake or when the St. Louis media weather prognosticators portend of a snowflake (sending legions to the Schnuck's and Dierberg's grocers for bread and milk). Ain't no Safeway in St. Louis.

I had no place to perform restoration at the time living in a University City apt.

Good engine B21E (grey market import from Holland) and M46 transmission.

I drove it in sans stabilizer bars. I was not able to part it out and and no one bit when I advertised it. I had already purchased my 1991 240 in June, 2000. Still have it and it has the strut bars, rear 23mm stabilizer bar, and GT strut tower reinforcing plates from my 1979 242 GT.

So, nothing. Taylor's Junkyard is an EPA Superfund site in the making as they never drain fluids before parking the cars for retail self-parts salvage.

A truly very sad day for me after owning this car for ten years. I brought my 1979 242 GT in St. Louis (actually St. Peter's in St. Charles County) on 22 August 1989.

And the stupid tool-stealing room mate at the time got the battery. Well, I gave it to him. Then he went through and lost more tools of mine. The halitosis head he is. Pew.

cheers,

dud.

Curious, what do scrap buyers pay for a junk Volvo in your area? 200

My 89 240 went to the junker this week for $350. I tried to sell it on Craigslist for $500, but it needed about a $1,000-$$2,000 to put it in tip top condition, and I had several lookers but no takers.

I hate to send it to scrap - it had a good body with no rust, and the red block is still strong - but it was clogging up the driveway. And I'm not set up to part it out.

I did remove the four year old OEM tail light assemblies before it left, have them for sale in the classifieds with a new never used e-brake console, and a Bosch O2 sensor and a scan tech temp sensor. The taillight assemblies are in great shape.

I know you said you removed/sold off most of the Bertone specific stuff. And I'm sure you just want it gone.

But it's a pretty rare car, and even the roof might be of value to someone wanting to do a custom... and, of course, the glass and doors... or at least the window frames.

That said, were it me, I'd take the $300 and be happy to have it gone.

Offers here in Mass. ranged from $250-410 for a 93 850. With the scrapers the price can vary from day to day based on the price of metal.

Ended up selling it for $500 to a guy who needed the engine (good engine). I assume you've used Craigslist. That's how I sold the 850. Maybe try the auto parts section??

I actually had to pay $35 to have my 144 carcass taken away 4 years ago in western CT. Granted, there was nothing left to remove.

I have a question first----does your car have a standard shift? I am in need of the left most bracket for the clutch pedal. I'm doing a V8 conversion (Oldsmobile 215 all aluminum in a 245). I originally built it with the Olds auto--now going to a T5. I have the pedals, master and slave cylinders--but a friend who yanked those from a scrapped 264 didn't take that bracket.
I scrap cars now and then (on Long Island) by dragging them to the recycler myself. $300 sounds about right for them to come get it. Prices vary according to the need. For a complete car (motor, trans, diff, radiator) I've seen the price range from $9-$12 per hundred. Right now the price is up. Units broken down will yield the most--iron engine blocks might bring $12 per or more--aluminum engine parts (called "dirty" aluminum) more than that. Copper is up. Wiring with insulation can add up if you have enough of it.
A couple of years ago I scrapped the body shell of the 940 turbo I had which had been "wrecked while parked" (the guy actually wrecked my wife's Saab too and damaged the bumper of my 144). Thankfully he had insurance. The bare--and I do mean bare--shell weighed 1500 lbs--paid a total of $75. -- Dave

jwalker had a good suggestion about using Craigslist--I keep an ad for Volvo parts running nearly all the time. There seems to be a lot of 240 Volvos in Brooklyn. It might be worth a shot to run an ad for a week or two priced at $600 or so--more than you'd get for scrap but not so much to scare folks away. -- Dave

Yeah, pricing just above scrap prices is a good idea. I had to lower the price a few times but eventually I did sell my car. All it takes is the right person seeing the ad...

E Central OH: $2-300 w/o engine & trans but with extra scrap metal added in. I take it to the yard. It varies much.

When I try to buy a parts car I often hear "The scrapper offered/ I can get/ it's worth at least for scrap ..." w/ numbers from $350 to $500. I assume this is hearsay and don't know if the buyer is a scrapyard or a junkyard expecting to part it.

Every family seems to have someone who knows car values. There's a once-beautiful red 1991 244 about 50 miles from me w/ a bad head gasket. ~100k miles, one-owner, near-mint condition. ~8 years ago. I made an offer but a brother-in-law said it was worth twice that. It's been sitting in a dirt-floor barn. It's down to the axles in the soft mud/ dirt; mice have eaten most of the interior; a board fell on the trunk; birds .... but they won't budge on that number.

i've scrapped two volvos in the past couple years-1995 850 ($200) and rusty 1983 240 ($300). i'm in northeast CT, but the scrappers were from southern MA and western RI. a rusty, ready-to-be-junked 262 will be worth more to a collector who needs a parts car than a scrapper but obviously harder to find.

The metal scrap yards on the west coast are paying about 40 cents a pound for steel and about 1.00 for older cast iron V8's. This equates to about 100 to 150 dollars for the block, heads and manifolds.

They will tow a body just to get the VIN number. Most states have a program that flat rate any car not moving under its own power to the scrap yards. Like a redemption value program.

Cars that can move under their own power (10 feet in distance) can give back between 500 and 1500 dollars depending on the person who owns it.

That is, if their income is in the basement as it comes off the taxes they do not pay anyway. You make too much, you do not get squat for it from the states! Go figure on that one, as some trade-in bargains of the past!

I will bet the scrap yards and charities can all work around that one, using some creativity within the resale arenas.
If I were you, I would work that resale angle to death from your side, before the tow truck gets only the sheet metal and title from you.

The title is not a problem really; it will be blithe according to city and county ordinances.

The poorest person around is one that does not exist, like in dead.
Phil
