What years used m46 trans with OD 1800 1968

Hello
A m46 has fallen into my lap and I am trying to see what use can be made of it.
Was this usable in cars with b18 or b20 or is it for newer 140's with the overhead cam
when did the short shifter come into being beside the 1800 ?
the numbers on the od say it was produced in 1974
my knowledge of those early 70's cars is limited.
Thanks for any insight.

M46 was only found in '75 or later cars. And only a very few '75 240s (only year of B20) cars had them. If that's what you got and it has it's bell housing, great!

There were no 140s with OHC engines. The B21 came along in '76, two years after the end of the 140 series.

Short shifter came along in 140s in 1972. 164's always had them though, with the M400/M410 gearbox. But 164 gear boxes won't work in 140's.

Basically, if you M46 was originally behind a B20 (that is to say, it's from a '75 240), it'll work behind any B18/B20... IF you have the bell housing. That is the unique part. Not sure about the shifter location though. Might not be right for a 1800.

I've personally never seen a B20/M46 unit, but if you can post a pic, surely someone here can let you know what engine it's from..

Thanks for the details I had no idea the b20 hung around until 75.
There is a bell housing and though I don't have a spare b18 20 bell housing to match it up against it appears to be that except no slave cyl mount but
a rather large hole for a clutch cable.I thought overhead cam because the trans came with an overhead cam head ,b21f I guess, but they could be unrelated.
      thanks again

yes, the '75 240 still had a B20. Only year.

If that's what you have, it does have value, but mostly to 140 folks.. for the exact reason you cite. Clutch cable. That's a difficult workaround.

That said, I assume Volvo did not make their overdrives... so it could be early B21 240s might have been put together with 2 year old O/D units. Maybe not.. I don't know.

That said... again, pictures would be key.

It's pretty much just if the bell housing works with a slant engine or a vertical engine. Should be able to look at the transmission bolt locations in your car and compare... see if it looks like for it to be in your 1800, would the transmission be attached somewhat sideways?

Well if you look at the bell housing straight on from the front the top 2 bolts
that you need 2.5 feet of extensions to get out of the b18 b20 engines are rotated left 15 degrees or so.
I guess this transmission was on a engine with a slant !
