Keep those breather boxes and flame traps clean! 200 1989

Hi, all...

Haven't posted in a while, but I've been reading. The '92 everyone helped me with a few years ago is in the hands of my son and doing great. I recently acquired an '89 and just started going through it tonight. The thread title says it all....

Hopefully, this time around, I won't have to pester you folks all the time; you were so helpful the first time around that I almost feel like I know what I'm doing now! Thank you.

Barry

The pic explains the thread title.. sigh...

Keep those breather boxes and flame traps clean! 200 1989

Well, I just pulled the breather box (oil separator) along with all the coolant hoses, water pump, belts, blah blah.. the usual new-to-me-car drill. Guess why there was so much oil everywhere. The old breather box didn't have an o-ring around the large bottom port. The P.O. (or one of them, anyway) figured that a little dab of some white plasticky goop would be fine. It wasn't. What a mess.

Tomorrow I'll get the new water pump, new hoses, plugs'n'wires'n'cap'n'rotor, and oil change taken care of. The breather/flame trap will have to wait until a new o-ring and flame-trap-to-air-intake-box hose gets here. Another beautiful fix by the previous owner; the just-mentioned hose was brittle and cracked all over the place where it fit on the flame trap, so he had wrapped it with electrical tape and tried to hold it on w/ a hose clamp. Didn't work. Sigh. Why do people do such things when the parts are so cheap and it only takes a little bit of time to do it right?

Wish me luck.. happy bricking..

Barry

Looks like my car. One day I'll pull the intake off and take a closer look. I did relocate the flame trap, but have been curious where the oil may have been coming from. Now I have a good idea. Think I might blow down the tube connecting to the breather box to see if it's clear.

Just think how much better you and the car will feel once you're done!

Looks like my old engine in my 740T looked after the OEM box split along the seam.... after I cleaned it out with brake cleaner :x Not sure if the brake cleaner ate the adhesive, but it's a possibility.

I hope to get my engine bay steam cleaned in the near future! New engine needs a clean space around it, right?

Cheers!
