Front Seat Options for 544 444-544

what replacement seats are used in the 544. I will be putting in a new interior and would like to know what front seats fit or can be modified to fit my 544. I've seen pictures of some nice looking upgrades. Any help with model and year car seat that have been used would be very much appreciated.

Front Seat Options for 544 444-544

    I fitted 850 seats in my 544.

I connect the electrical seat controls directly to the battery as I almost never adjust the seat. (Plus - I'm lazy)

I had two 1/2 X 3 inch bars welded to the seat rails after I ground off the original mounts, I also found out that the seat frames had about 3 inches of height adjustment.

When I was done, I found that I could have saved the side air bags as the are not electric.

I made a 1/2 inch piece of plywood, mounted it where the 544 rails were and bolted the seat bars to the wood. I cut out the back and the front to form sort of a fat H - when I was satisfied with the configuration, I copied the wood in 1/2 inch aluminum

    Tips

Seats are supply and demand at the junk yard - some modern seats are cheaper than older ones

Pick a donor car that has intact weather protection.

Cloth seats are nice if you have no AC

I should have taken the back seat as well as it could have been narrowed to fit.

Front Seat Options for 544 444-544

I have a pair of front seats and a back seat that were from a early 60's 122. i dont know if the 544 or 44 used them but I think they had similar front seats with the low backs and not the textured cloth.

The set of 3 seats would be best suited to an original early version 122 4 door. a 62 to 64 122 would have this early style.

I think the seats changed prior to 66 to a style with a bumpy sort of vinyl, Headrests became a bit later, maybe 67 - 69 or so.

these might be a good candidate for someone doing a complete restoration of a 122 or possibly a 544 / 444 or duett with attention to originality. If you are willing to accept seats from some other car that will be a cheaper option. I paid $1,000 a long time ago to have my original seats repaired professionally with some sections replaced. mine have the headrests which are a bit later.

2 door 122s had a different shape to the back seat, mine is a 4 door so they are rounded at the ends and these reupholstered ones that I have are like that. the 544 / 444 likely have a different shaped back seat , but I'm less familiar with them.

im not sure what body color came with light grey upholstery. maybe a red car or red with white. easy to die them darker.

In Europe, a good choice is the seating from a 2 door 340 0r 360. The cloth ones look quite period too. Don't think there are many 300 series cars in the USA. Original Beetle seats are similar to PV ones and there are lots of seat cover choices for them.

Front Seat Options for 544 444-544

Hi, a few years ago I was looking at photos of someone's PV with red leather high back buckets on this site. I enquired what the seats were from and the member advised they were Miata seats and they slid right onto the PV seat track without modification. I was delighted and haven't given it much thought since as I have a 1990 Miata which I use in the summer and would be able to remove a seat to test fit it to the 61 PV544 that hopefully I will get apart in the next year or two to rebuild. Try an archive search for seat replacements. You may find what your looking for, Bruce

I posted the same suggestion a few years ago after test-fitting a seat from my own 1990 (1st year) Miata in my inactive, final-year 544. The seat is lightweight, fits with lots of room to spare, and is of foam-padded, sheet metal pan construction of durability, comfort, and abundant lateral support. It has much less vertical height between its mounting rails and tush level, so there is plenty of room for adapter arrangements (which I did not design or build) above the 544's built-in seat-carrying structure. More vertical footroom or stowage height under the front seats would thus be obtained. A bonus the Miata can't use but the 544 can is the Miata seat's generous reclining provisions that are combined with its side lever-operated backrest angle adjustment that backseat passengers would need to use to get in/out.

Miata integral headrests had/(stillhave?) provisions for optional speakers in them; mine didn't have them installed and member John Mc commented back then that those speakers are not very powerful. A deeper bucket shape in the seatback is easily obtained by slipping out the 2-inch thick foam pad from the lower center section and carving a tapered transition in the upper foam padding with a sharp kitchen carving knife. I did that in 1992 upon buying the Miata to get myself enough leg room and I still enjoy the more surrounding backrest fit to my rounded ribcage that resulted.

Thanks West Coast, this helps to narrow down the search. I have a machine shop available so no issues to fabricate any mounting brackets. I did see an good looking up grade to Toyota seats but not sure what year or model. here is a link maybe?

Front Seat Options for 544 444-544

There are probably any number of seats that will fit in your 544, although the last time I asked this question here I noticed a trend of people recommending older seats. The most accurate answer, though, is "any seat that fits."

This Autumn, after taking measurements of various seats in various junk yards, I installed a set of front seats from a 2000 C30 in my '63 544. I couldn't be more pleased with the results. To install I fabricated (read: had sheared to size at the steel yard, then drilled six holes in each plate) a quarter inch steel plate for each seat. I also ground the original bolt points off the rails and welded on half inch steel mounting points (read: a quarter inch thick flat bar with hole drilled in it at the end of each rail) being careful to not weld too deep and being mindful of the travel of the seat rail. I bolted the plates to the original 544 mounting platform, I bolted the seats to the plates via the mounting points, and voila!

The improvements in comfort are worth every penny. I can corner hard without flexing like I'm doing a sit up. I can drive for more that 45 minutes without feeling like I have to visit the chiropractor. The car is now safer due to the existence of a head rest (last year I was rear ended, and even though the accident was mild it left a sore neck for more than six months). And best of all, although I was worried that it might make my ride feel too rigid since I've converted from a coil spring seat bed to a solid state seat bed, the upgrade has actually improved my ride by yielding less of a "bouncy" feel and therefore contributing to greater control over the pedals and wheel.

It's true, it's a tight fit, but it works, and I'm very happy with the results. The main thing to remember is to find a seat with a fold forward/slide forward capability. My new seats also have lumbar adjustment, which is nice, and height adjustment, which I am satisfied with but which I also consider unnecessary.
