have the dreaded dead speedo - given all the trouble others have had with the re-cap procedure i figured a straight replacement was the better option - i was able to pull one (yazaki) from a donor cluster but it has substantially higher mileage (100k km more!) - is there an easy way to wind back the donor before i install it?

Your sig shows models that did not have speedo issues, nor Yazaki's; are you sure it's not just the pickup at the diff, the wiring to which fails?

not sure where you are getting your intel but the 90 740 definitely has the Yazaki speedo as indicated by the spaces between the numbers on the trip indicator (http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/ElectricalSpeedometerRepair.htm)

i have diagnosed all internal wiring from the diff sensor finding no faults right from the sensor all the way to the dash connections - did the noted rear sender test as well which led to no readout on the speedo unit - this leads me to believe that the there is a fault in the main speedometer unit

Been there, tried that. I don't recommend fiddling with this instrument unless you are real good with delicate mechanisms and have some appropriate tools.
