New 240 Sedan 200 1990

I am excited to post some photos of this car I bought this weekend. It is a single owner, stored in a garage 1990 240 sedan. The car shows almost no signs of wear. On a downside, the gas is no telling how hold and the oil was last changed in 2006. It started with a jump and runs good when it warms up. It is a little hard to start and I can hear the in tank pump humming. The timing belt was changed in 1995 at 29,000 miles. It currently has 44,700 miles and the odometer does work. The finish is shiny. The antenna is a manual affair and I would have expected it to be power. The original CR 712 radio does not power up (fuse good). Paint is original.

Just wanted you all to see it and may tell what you think it would bring. I really don't need it right now. I have a place to store it under cover but not in a garage (car port).

New 240 Sedan - magnificent car, keep it 200 1990

Wow, gorgeous car. I have not see one this nice in years. Even the few owned by enthusiasts around here are much more run-down. The cloth that Volvo used for their seats was durable, easy to clean, breathed, and was comfortable. Why do people now have this strange obsession for leather seats in their cars?.

I suggest you keep it and use it. Think of the alternative: you sell it, make a lousy profit of $5 or $8k and then what? Where else could you buy transport of this quality for $5 or $8K? If you buy another brick, almost surely you will have to fix it - there goes several thousands. Buy a new high-end car - there goes $35k+ plus insurance, tag, etc.

Even the engine is clean on yours, but what a mess of tubes and vacuum lines....

Buy some Xpel film for those still-clear headlights, and have fun.

New 240 Sedan - magnificent car, keep it 200 1990

V7,
I agree with you. I just wonder if the car is nice enough to try to preserve? Not as much fun as driving it. The car is as it appears. Absolutely no rust or dings. I believe it has had a fender repaired on the front as the inner finder has a couple of wrinkles in it where it looks like it was hammered back and painted but I cant tell that for sure.

I would like to take it to the next VOCA meet or something like that. It's crazy, the little things you notice. There is not even a single scratch on the threshold of the trunk and the rubber is supple.

I think I will try to keep it under the car port and drive it in dry weather. The 88 wagon is my daily driver anyway.

Enjoyed showing it to brickboard. Most of my friends don't appreciate it like you guys do.

My kids keep wish it was an old corvette.

I would expect that, on the national market, it should bring $12K or so, particularly if it has good documented 1 ownership, maint. etc and assuming no rust or body/paint work or serious mechanical issues.

VERY unusual to find a 240 with these TRUE miles.....

Don't sell it cheap, or if you do, email me. I will pay cash and am from TN.

First, beautiful car. I am jealous as I am driving a beater 1990 240 DL.

Please keep in mind that rubber parts age even if not driven. All hoses are seriously suspect with heater hoses and radiator hoses the most drastic if they fail. Next in line would be the brake hoses followed by every vacuum line.

Bushings are equally suspect but you can wait to see how they fair. Just plan on the control arm and stab bar bushings. TAB's are likely OK for now but will fail "prematurely" instead of lasting 150-200K.

Mike

The brake fluid doesn't look to good.
The original window sticker price was 19,995 and did not list any optional features so I guess the sun roof and power windows were standard.

Jim,
I have not decided to sell it. I have 2 240 wagons, a 760 and an 850. I was just curious what it might be worth. The car has been in the Tennessee it's whole life.

That is so ironic. I also live in Tennessee. How much is it worth? Hard to say but I see one on Auto Trader with 18000 miles on it priced at $18000. NADA and Kelley Blue Book are at the other end, around $2500. If everything checks out, I would think you can get $10000. Maybe more. But the market is slim, only those of us that appreciate older Volvos. It would be my basic driver. So, please keep me in mind if you decide to sell it. I have a 1982 245 and a 1973 142. I've put almost $10000 in the '82 and it's very nice. The '73 has 140000 original miles on it and is absolutely original and no rust and quite a find. I also have two American cars, a '96 2-door Cavalier and a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis, and two of the four have to go. Can't figure out which ones to get rid of.
Jim

Saw another one on ebay with 71000 miles on it and a buy it now price of $9500. Wagons are more desirable so maybe somewhere between $5000 and $10000?

Nice car!

Is it a "DL"? The 1990 240 sedan I owned for 10 years was a DL and it came with PW, PL, cruise and a factory sunroof. I believe the PW, PL and maybe the cruise were standard on the DL in 1990. The sunroof was definitely an option. As I recall, I don't think Volvo made a "GL" in 1990 (which had more standard equipment such as leather). I'm sure someone else will chime in on that.

If it were my car, I'd flush all the fluids and replace with new. Maybe an AutoRX treatment on the engine to clean the sludge out. Consider doing the timing belt as the rubber is 16 years old (and check out the other belts too).

Same nice blue cloth interior as my white sedan! My interior looked almost as good when I sold it at 300k. They wear like iron. The blue cloth lasts forever...:)

It is a DL and do plan to change all of the fluid. I started with the oil and filter last night and thought I would do it again in a about 1500 miles or so. I want to get a motive brake bleeder pump and get all of the old brake fluid out. I guess I will install a new radio/cd player but I really wish the one that's in there would work, it looks nice.

The car is so nice I hate to put it on the road full time.

If you are impatient, you can make a power bleeder from a $6 garden sprayer, spare brake res cap and a few cheap plumbing fittings.

FYI, the Cruise was not standard on the DL so it was a dealer-installed option or an owner installed option.

Beauty of a car!

Mike

Looks like the differential is leaking. Get a new gasket for that puppy and some fluid.

Depending on how much you paid, how much you'll end up putting into it to make it like new again and how much it means to let it go. But if somehow you made $5000 profit you'll be set up with a nice fund to keep the other bricks rolling. Maybe designate any big profits towards fixing up a 240 that other wise would meet demise.
