'93 245 classic MPG sucks 200 1993

Ok, here we go with another mpg problem. This time it is my mother's 93 245. Last mark was 11 gallons = 170 miles. This is about the mileage I WAS getting before I swapped my pink label ecu for a white label. I did some small checks, no codes through ignition, or fuel system. White label ecu already (I figured since it has 3.1) Bellows look fine, fuel pumps do their job fine. Overall it runs perfect, but 15 mpg is really quite terrible. The exhaust is snapped off after the cat, but I think it should still create enough back pressure to let the engine run correctly. Fuel injector connections look good and clean, amm seems to operating well... Another tidbit here, it stalls and runs very poorly when wet. Hit me with any ideas, and anything I need to check out. We just replaced the dizzy cap trying to pin the wet weather problem down to no avail. Thanks for the help guys!

Fix your exhaust pipe first. If there is room, a soup can and a couple of clamps works wonders. The exhaust being open right behind the cat will cause the O2 sensor to read lean and that tells the ECU to increase the injector flow.

Then, check for any vacuum leaks. Check for a cold thermost reading on the dash, replace if the engine doesn't get up to operating temp rapidly.

Thanks for the heads up guys... the cap suggestion was suggested from fellow members on here with the stall and sputter while damp. There is no arching, I doused the motor with water when it was warmer and it did fine... (weird, I know) I have been rpessuring her to fix the exhaust since it has happened, but she is the reason my 244 got in such bad shape as it was... she procrastinates, and lets her cars fall apart around them, then wonders why everything starts to fail at once. (trust me, I have been catching up since March) I hope this pushes her to fix it, especially since gas just shot up 30 cents overnight. Her exhaust snapped the flange of the resonator off, so no tincan fix will work. She has to replace the resonator at least, and possibly the cat due to a rotten egg smell starting today. Thank you all for your responses. I will relay them to her immedietly, and hope she does the right thing and sets back the money to get it done.

Dude the "rotten egg smell" makes it quite certain you are running rich. If that cat isnt dead/plugged yet....it will be shortly!

Clogged or wet air filter will give you that problem also.

I'm with TREV29... Replacing Just the Ignition cap doesn't really help if you didn't change the Rotor and the Wires as well.
Absolutely start with these basic tune up parts first.

I'd pull off the front hose on the Fuel Pressure Regulator and smell for raw gas. Also make sure that hose is connected to the Intake manifoldon the other end

Check your plug cables in the dark. They may be arcing. Dampness, eg. from a spray bottle, may effect them.

You have been down the road before. ECT, engine thermostat, and 0-2 sensor. A bad pipe having influence on the 0-2 sensor are good starting points.

I had put in a thermostat with a lower temperature
thinking that I would help the engine run better, but
all that happened was my MPG went down. I replaced
with the proper item and MPG went back to 'normal'.

temp sensor bad would make it run rich, also.
